「トロイの木馬」は「ノアの箱舟」や「アラジンのランプ」などと同じく世界の神話や聖典、伝説などに現われるイメージの中ではもっとも有名でなじみのあるものである。 ギリシャの神話ではペガサス、メドゥーサの首、サイレン、ミノタウロス,キュクロプスなど多くのこのような名のしれたイメージがある。 その中でもやはり「トロイの木馬」はトップクラス。車を足とした巨大な木馬が古代トロイの城の中に置れ、その中にギリシャの兵士が隠れている姿は一度聞けば忘れられないロマンのイメージだ。スティブもそのように思っているようで、これに強く引かれ、いくつかこのテーマの作品を制作している。
先ほど紹介した「イオとプロメテウス」など表現的でドラマチックに描かれた絵画と違い、トロイの木馬の作品など多くのスティブの立体作品はユーモアーにあふれていて、材料の扱いかたを見ても遊び心で作り上げられたように見える。たとえば下の写真のイメージ「トロイのカラバン」などテキストで見られる木馬のイメージと違い、馬の頭の変わりに人間の顔、車輪の変わりに人間の足など、すき勝手に普通で見られる木馬のイメージを変えている。この変形により雰囲気と意味も見る人には変わるだろう。他の作品などではバイオリンを馬の胴体などに使ったりしている。ようするに彼は羽や人間などを動物と合体する古代ギリシャ人が得意とする方法を彼らたちのつくりあげたイメージにしたようだ。スティブは古代ギリシャ人以上に古代ギリシャ人なのかも。
ティルドン氏の微妙なユーモアーは下の「彼らたちは戦争に行く」の作品でもあきらか。戦争に行く騎士団というより、弱い物を襲う野武士や北欧のバイキングのような荒っぽい連中のように感じる。ハゲタカのような鳥の顔をしたものもいればおかしなヘルメットを被った者もいる事が私にそう感じさせる。しかし行儀よくあるようでないような乗り物に乗っている姿がなんとなく面白く、彼らを嫌わないようにさせる。
「閉まったトロイの木馬」と「トロイの木馬と五人のギリシャの兵士」はもちろん同じ作品。これはまだテキストに近い木馬かな。でもここでも胴体はコックティルの棚のようなもので作られていて、中には静かに待ち伏せしている兵士より、ワインかウィスキーが入っているように思ってしまう。 この面白さになんとなく笑える。しかしこの作品は構成的にも高く評価する。小さい上品な頭に空間的で螺旋のはしごのような首の形はなんとなく美しい。それと一つ偉くおおきな車輪があり、バランスのないようにも一瞬見えるが、これが構成をダイナミックにし、全体の形が面白くなっているように見える。
これらの作品を見ても分かると思うが、スティブは鉄専門の彫刻家というより、鉄を中心にしあらゆる材料で形を組み立てる mix media artist のようだ。鉄のほか粘土、板、石工や獣脂粘土のスコルピーを使っているよう。このスコールピーは細かい作業ができ、かるく焼けばかたく、長持ちする材料などでホビーせんように使われていて、日本でも私の学生たち何人かが使っていた。最近彫刻家たちも使い始めているよう。 スティブも顔などのモデリング作業に使っている。
見てのようにスティブは「ガルベンの馬」のように表現的な彫刻も造るが、神話をとおしてユーモアーなものが多い。さりげなく、メッセジーも入れているが彫刻作品の形、彼の遊びごころと想像力を私はもっとも楽しむ。
ほかに詩人の詩を鉄で抽象作品に造ったりしている。今この地方でもっとも知名度の高いクラッシクの作曲家と詩人と共同で日本の菅原の道真の詞を音楽・詩・絵などで新しくアレンジしているところ。私は札幌に移住したばかりのころ、ほんの少しだけれど一曲だけ覚えるほど、詩吟をまなんでいた。その作品が菅原の道真の作品だったので大変興味深いプロジェクトで完成が楽しみ。

Trojan horse is like a Noah's Ark, one of the world's most unforgettable image from myths, scriptures and fables. Come to think of it, Greek myths contain a whole lot of these- Pegasus, Medusa's head, labyrinth, minotaur, sirens, Argonaut, cyclops, amazons, golden fleece, wings of Icarus- the list goes on and on. Surely though the Trojan horse is on the top of that list. And it seems to be on the summit of Steve's list too as he has created a whole lot of them.
Unlike works in paint which as in " Io and Prometheus", I find to be dramatically expressive, Steve seems to be more playful making them. "Trojan Caravan" piece on the right for example has two pairs of human feet instead of wheels as stated in the standard text. And he has replaced horse's head with a human head. In other pieces, he has made Trojan horse from old violins! As the way I see it, Steve's playing Greek on Greek. What I mean is Greeks love to put wings, human heads and what not on the body of horses, bovines and other creatures, so Steve appears to be doing the same on Trojan horse- replacing parts with whatever comes in his world of imagination.
Steve's sense of humor is also shown in the piece "guys go to war". Here instead of noble soldiers with sense of honoring code of chivalry, to me we have here a cart full of ruffians going out for "no good" with some wearing like heads of powerfully-beaked, condor-like scavenger birds and some with odd looking, sexually shaped helmets: ready to go plundering and pillaging rather than go for all out war. Oddly, these landed berserkers are sitting upright like model students on unlikeable cart like transporter... to me this contrast is subtly funny, and makes these rascals, lovable.
"Trojan horse closed" and "Trojan horse with five Greek soldiers" are of course the same piece, and it comes close to the standard image of Trojan horse. However, even here, the body of horse is replaced with what look like a cocktail shelf. One expects wine or whiskey than patiently waiting sitting figures inside. And again, one chuckles with this light, subtle humor. As to composition of this piece, a small, exquisite head of horse and one oddly, large back wheel is brilliantly placed. The small head contrasted to a long, semi spiral ladder like neck makes the form noble, and the large wheel makes the form dynamic with its unbalanced asymmetry.
Viewing these works, its apparent that Steve is not a pure metal artist, but seemed most comfortable with mixed media that centered on metal. Besides metal, among others wood, clay, plaster and sculpey clay are used. Sculpey is a polymer clay that is being used by hobby modelers. Because of its hard and lasting quality besides its ability to model details, sculpey is increasingly being used by sculptors. Here Steve seems to apply it on areas like face where detailed modeling is demanded.
As you can see from the works just viewed, though Steve makes expressive work like " Galvin's Horse" , and has subtle messages in his sculptures, playful humor appears to be most predominant in his three dimensional works.
