犬養ギャラリ：オーナの犬養氏（中）と橋口潤平君の作品を見学に来た友人たち

Inukai who graduated as a print major from Dohto University in 2007 opened a new gallery in Toyohira district of Sapporo, Japan. According to my correspondence, Mai Mai, Inukai converted his grandfather's old house next door into a gallery space. From photos, it looks like an interesting space with a warmth of old, wooden dwelling.

While I was in Sapporo, Japan, I was surprised to see so many unique, intersting gallery spaces and sculpture parks in this city. It looks like Inukai gallery is another excellent addition to this distinct collection of galleries of this city. And from what I have heard, already former students from Dohto are aligning for an exhibition here. One of them, Junpei Hashiguchi has already shown his works here (above photo).

道都大学卒業生（中島プリントゼミ０７’）の犬養君が札幌市の豊平区にギャラリーを開いた。札幌の出来事を私によく教えてくれるマイマイによると犬養君、 自分の家の隣のお爺ちゃんの古い家をギャラリーに改造したらしい。古い家の暖かさと個性のある空間、写真ではなかなか素敵なギャラリーに見える。

私 が札幌にいて少しびっくりしたことの一つは面白い、ユニックなギャラリーや芸術公園がこの町に多いこと。こんどの犬養ギャラリーのオプニングでさらにもう 一つ札幌市に面白いギャラリーがふえたようだ。さらに札幌のアートシンを広げることを期待する。すでに道都大学のＯＢたちがギャラリーで展示する予定でな らんでいるようだ。その一人、橋口潤平君はすでにここで個展（上）を開いているようだ。

Mai Mai's report from Sapporo- 「マイマイからのレポート」

A former student of mine, Mai Mai, periodically send me e-mails with photos. These inform me of going on around Dohto University where I use to teach and in the city of Sapporo where I use to live for twenty years. According to her, earlier in the year Dohto University's Nakajima seminar held its 50th Seminar Exhibition at Sapporo City Public Art Gallery. The exhibition as usual occupied a huge ground floor ｓpace of this public gallery where only art museum can be comparable in size in Portland. I would imagine this exhibition is larger than usual because of being the 50th exhibition. Having seen much of these exhibitions of this seminar, its incredible that this print seminar could hold such a large scale, high standard exhibition so many times within a period of twenty years. I could only say congratulation to professor Nakajima and his many talented students.

Often former seminar students also exhibit in Nakajima seminar exhibition so here's Mai Mai with friend, Ikumin who is about to be mother.

元私のゼミ生だったマイマイから、いまでも時々私が昔教えていた道都大学や住んでいた札幌市、それに最近の日本についてのメールが写真とともに送ってくる。彼女に感謝している。さてマイマイによると道都大学の看板ゼミ、中島ゼミが第５０回中島ゼミ展を札幌市民ギャラリーの一階のギャラリースペースで開いたらしい。二十年そこらで５０回もスケールの大きい、質も素晴らしいゼミ展を開いたことについては驚き感動する。５０回のうち３０回以上見学した私だから、そのすごさについて言える。中島先生といままでのゼミ生におめでとうと伝えたい。

展覧会の写真から数ヵ月後、イクミン女の子を産んだらしい。友人の風間君に抱かれている。風間君私の教え子でもあるが、この写真を最初見たとき、イクミンのだんなさんと思って、勘違いした。。。へんな顔してだいているからまちがうんだと私いいわけする。


Izumon ( in the back) who recently had success winning award in a major manga comic book contest held another exhibition. Judging by photo, seemingly a rather cute, feminine show that is very uncharacteristic of her. I'm sure there's lot more to it than they appear as her world is populated with mystery and darker elements along with joyful and innocent ones.

最近、漫画賞などもらって大活躍中のイズモン（後ろ）、今回は展覧会を開いたようだ。この写真をちらっと見ると、えらく、かわいい、若い女の子の世界の作品展に見える。でも彼女を知っている私、おそらくよく見ると別な面がたっぷりとでているであろう。でもイズモンの世界はユニックで超面白いー私彼女のファンの一人である。

（今年の冬・春・は個人的にも私にとって暗いときであったが、夏になってけっこう明るく、陽気になった。そのムードとこのような明るい展示やイクミンの赤ちゃんなどの写真を見ながらこの記事を書いていると、気がついたら、元Blue Hearts /High Lows　の真島氏の歌（ハッピソング）をYou-tubeからとりよせ、聞きながら書いていた。便利な世界だ）

My Last Seminar Student, Noriko "Mori mori"Mori'sThesis Exhibition 「私の道都大学での最後の教え子、モリモリの卒業制作」

Noriko Mori held her thesis exhibition along with other Dohto University art students at Sapporo Civic Gallery in February. Morimori as her friends and myself call her is special to me in that she 's probably the last student at Dohto University in Japan that I can say I had real input into her artistic development. There were others in this 2010 class that I taught as sophomore students in my last year at Dohto, but I taught them in regular class session whereas Morimori came by after hours as unofficial seminar student (only juniors and seniors are allowed in seminar). With graduation of Mori mori and others of this class, much of my remaining tie with this university in northern Japan ends.

I could not get hold of Morimori to get more information on her work, so I will make comment of it through previous knowledge. Morimori was working on the theme of "World of Gandhara". Gandhara as you may know was civilization in ancient India ( present Afghanistan and Pakistan border area-really a hot bed of Taliban activity!) that flourished over 1,500 years ago. To Morimori though its a mythical world of her imagination. She was interested in developing architectural feature as well as people of this world and this particular piece with rows of strange faces in a contained space seem to reflect both. Hope she continues to develop this world.



道都大学美術部の生徒たちが札幌市民ギャラリーに今年の卒業制作展を開いた。その中に私が２００７－８年に教えた森ノリコも展示した。当時二年生だった今年の四年生たちの中には何人か私が授業で教えた学生たちもいたが、「ゼミ生」として教えたのは森ノリコだけ。通常、三年と四年生しか正式にゼミ生として道都では受けないけれど放課後の時間によく彫刻室にきた森のりこはゼミ生同時に扱っていた。したがって、彼女が道都を卒業するのを聞くといよいよこの大学でのなごりが消えるようになるようで少し寂しい。他同級生の中田三由紀・。高木勝太や安部兄弟それとタレント豊かな石井誠などもよく彫刻ゼミ室に作業・遊びなどにきたので彼らたちの卒業も同時さびしく感じる。彼らたちの卒業制作作品もできたらみたいものだ。

森のりこの作品にもどるが、彼女は私がいたころ「ガンダラの世界」を描いていた。「ガンダラ」とは古代インドで盛んだった仏教を中心にした文明だが、森のりこのガンダラは彼女の独特なイメージの世界だ。私が彼女を指導していた二年生のころ、森ノリコはこのガンダラの人々や建築物を作り始めていた。狭い、インテリアの中に不思議な顔がならんでいる卒業制作の写真を見ると、この二つの方向性が同時にあらわれているようだ。　この写真を私に送ってくれた昔の卒業生のマイマイによると結構面白い作品らしい。卒業後これからもこの世界を造りあげてほしい。

One of my former student sent me photos of recent exhibition of Junpei Hashiguchi: his friends call him Paul. Paul graduated from Dohto University in 2005, majoring in silk screen print. While Paul exhibited prints, its his paintings I would like to present here. Unlike his prints and unlike works of most painters in Japan which shows technical virtuosity, these works look quite naive. Yet these works reminisce me early works of Mattise ( nude figures) and Chagall ( elongated figure). Paul's works do not have great inventiveness, rhythmic lines and color composition of these masters, but to me they possess simple charm and warmth that's delight.

After graduation Paul worked for while on drama joining a group of Thespians. He even performed in international drama festival in Edinburgh with them. I remember helping out a little translating a short play for this festival and found that some Japanese words such as 'chindonya' are almost impossible to translate cause their are no equivalent in English. Chindonya is a clownish advertisement group that dress in traditional Japanese clothes announcing such things as opening of new store while playing musical instruments.

I told this story because for some reason his painting seem to me at home with world of this play and his seemingly easy going character which I like alot.

In my last year at teaching in Japan, 1908, I notice several Freshman painting in similar simple style as that of Paul that caught me by surprise. I couldn't say then this was one of going directions of Japanese painting. I regret not seeing how these students develop since.

最近、私の教え子から、橋本 Ｈａｓｈｉｍｏ’ポール”潤平君の展覧会の写真が送ってきた。彼は２００５年、道都大学のデザイン学科を卒業した学生で、シルクプリントを学んだ生徒だ。 この展覧会では専門のプリントの作品も展示したようだが、ここでは彼の絵画の作品について述べたい。日本でよく見る、技術的に優れた作品とは違い、ナイブ に見える作品が結構私には魅力に感じる。ヌードで外に転んでいる絵や体が伸びた人の絵など若いころのシャガールやマチースの絵を私に思わす。もちろん、彼 らのような優れた色彩や線のセンスなどは見せないが、言葉で言えないチャームと温かみを感じさせるところが魅力。

卒業後、ポールは演劇の ほうに力を入れていたようで、仲間とスコットランドのエジンバラ市の国際演劇の祭りにまで参加したようだ。その時私も少し彼らたちの短い演劇の英訳を手 伝った。「チンドンヤ」など英語で訳できないような言葉などあり、英訳の難しさを改めておしえられる。ポールの絵を観ていると何故かこのときの劇の世界と 彼の絵が同じ、マーイペースのポールの性格・世界と合併しているように私には感じた。

日本で最後に教えた年、２００８年に入学した一年生 の中に何人かポールの絵に似たような’ナイブなスタイルで描いた学生たちがいて少しびっくりした。’これがこれからの日本の絵の方向性の一つかと思った。 それからの彼らたちの様子が見えなかったことが少し残念だ。

Tomoshige Kouji, is one of many students who joined my sculpture class with experience as a plastic model maker. Several of them takes model making seriously, and go on to become a professional or semiprofessional at modelmaking or related commercial art field.

Kouji makes various types of models, some are original figures and others are conversions. These he exhibits and sales through his homepage.

Lately, Kouji sent me photos of his recent works. Unfortunately some of them did not come through the mail, but these two conversion car models came through.

多くの私の道都大学でのゼミ生はプラモデル経験者で卒業後も真剣にプラモデルを作っている。中ではプラモデルなどホビー系の仕事をしている卒業生もいる。友重好司君もこの仲間、卒業後、オリジナルなフィガーやプラモデルなどの車を改造し、インターネットなどで展示したり、販売している。最近かれからいくつかの イメージが送ってきて、そのうちあけられたのが上の二つ写真に紹介した車のプラモデルだ。

For a graduate work, Tomoshige combined his plastic model making experience, his increase experience with clay work from modeling in sculpture classes, and his desire to make social and political statement through his art into several diorama works that depict various demons and spirits admonishing people who he felt have done injustice. These include US naval base in Okinawa, people who litter the environment and kids who litter and desurface these.

*I have lost the original title of these works so I have given substitute title that I believe come close.,

Though the statement that Tomoshige makes in these works are sometimes rather simple for me, the visual part of his works are very interesting and original. I like these type of works where students (or artists) utilize their background to come up with quite unique art. Also I must note that social/political/ religious comment through visual art is quite rare in Japan.

卒業制作では友重君はプラモデルの経験の他、授業でつよめた粘土の扱いと、社会や政治にたいしてのコメントを生かした作品を制作した。マイナス的な存在に対して怒った妖怪などをいくつかのジオラマの形にして描いた。これらは落書き少年らや、沖縄の米軍や　リストラする会社などだ。

もっと長く人生を経験した大人の私から見たら、学生のころの好司君が作品をとおして言いたいことは
ところどころ単純に見えるが、しかし作品そのものはオリジナルでとても面白い。それぞれ学生（プロも）が自分の個性のあるバックグランドからあみだした美術はとても独特でおもしろく、これらはそのいい例だ。

Meeting Michelangelo and Friends in Italy 「イタリアでミケランジェロとの出会いーイサオ君」

One of my former student, Isao Umeda went to Norwich, England this year to further his study in art. Recently, Isao sent me photos of Norwich surrounding where he lives; and of his trip to Italy. Photos of Italy trip consist mostly of works by Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. With these Italian photos I will present as photo images with my brief explanation. with Norwich photos, I will present as a short slide show.

今年、私の教え子の梅田イサオ君（道都大学２００４卒）が美術をさらに深めるため、イギリスに移住した。最近イサオ君から彼が住んでいるノリッジ市とそ の辺りの写真とイタリアの旅の写真が送ってきました。イタリアの写真はミケランジェロの作品が主で他、画家のラファエルと彫刻家のドナチェロの作品なども あります。ノリッジの写真はスライドとし（上）、イタリアの写真（下）は私の短い説明つきで

Donatello along with Michelangelo was two leading sculptors of Renaissance Italy. There are some figurative sculptors who consider him above Michelangelo in that Donatello provides the best solution to what each different theme asks; that i,s Donatello sculpts according to the theme of work instead of imprinting artistic style on the work as is with Michelangelo. But what a style!

ミケランジェロとともにイタリアルネサンスを代表する彫刻家、ドナチェロの作品。彫刻家の中ではミケランジェロよりドナチェロのほうが優れていると思う人たちがけっこういる。彼らに言わせるとドナチェロは彫刻のテーマに合わせて作品を制作するのが非常に優れている。これにたいし、ミケランジェロはすごい技術力をもっているが、違うテーマでも自分のスタイルを押し付けて作成する。でもすごいスタイルだ！

One of the last sculpture piece by Michelangelo. Supported by Nicodemus and two Marys, the face Nicodemus is said to be that of old Michelangelo.

晩年のミケランジェロの作品。後ろのニコデマス（又はジョセフかも）とす二人のメリーに支えられているキリストの彫刻像。ニコデマスの顔はミケランジェロの顔をモデルにしたと言われている。

Work of very young Michelangelo. One of my favorite classical sculpture, speaking from little experience, its amazing how anyone can carve something so intricate from something hard as Carrara marble.

若きミケランジェロの作品で私の大好きなクラシック彫刻の一つである。学生のころからの少しの経験からで言うけれど、硬いカララの大理石からこのような複雑な作品が彫れるなんて信じられないほどの技術力をミケランジェロはもっていたようだ。

Mai Mai likes to scribble her characters all over the place, especially on cardboard storage boxes and on scratch papers that use to be abundant in my sculpture room at Dohto. And this is one of them which I found lying in the room and brought as a souvenir all the way from Japan.

「カードの大きさの紙に落書き」　マイマイ落書きが好きでダンボールなど色んな彫刻ゼミ室にあるものに落書きした。この落書きも物ずきな私が見つけ日本からわざわざもってきた。

This is a photo of student Chibashin working on two thesis projects in clay, but two Casper-like guardian figures on the wall are Mai Mai's sculptures.

千葉君が卒業制作している写真だが後ろの壁に置いてある二つのゼミ室の守護零のような白い彫刻はマイマイの作品。

One of the things I look forward to at New Year or in the middle of summer is a greeting card from Mai Sugimoto, one of my former students at Dohto University. Her serious art works are fabrics dyed with natural coloring materials with patterns that are original, but resting and at home with the medium . However, Mai Mai as we call her has another side, where she freely makes light artwork that applies her distinct characters that to me seem like Simpsons gone Casper of the friendly ghost fame. Mai Mai use to make sculptures of these comical figures in my class, but now she sends me original greeting cards with these characters that brightens my living space. Here I'll share few.

お正月やお盆のころに私が楽しみにしている一つは昔の学生たちからのカードで、とくに杉本麻衣は面白い手作りカードを毎年送ってくれる。マイマイと親しい人たちから呼ばれている彼女はメインとして自然の材料で染めたファブリックを制作している。でももう一つ面白い面ももっており、独特な漫画にでるようなキャラクターが登場する作品も造っている。私の道都大学の彫刻ゼミに一時所属していた時もこのようなアメリカの漫画のシンプソンらがキャスパー化されたような作品を造っていた。卒業後、これらは年賀として私のところに送ってきて、部屋をにぎわってくれている。

今年（２０１０）の年賀で以前よりも少し違う感じだ。家庭的なところがちょっとサザエさん化しているように感じる。キャラクタのスタイル変えたのかな？

'Graduates Going Abroad "道都大卒業生たち海外へ」

Yoshida (striped shirt) was an outstanding student in my sculpture class. However, he was a painting major. He recently decided to further his study in painting by attending art school in Paris.　「私の彫刻の従業で優秀だった吉田君（０８’卒安田ゼミ）は絵画を習いにパリへ」

Masa Oohashi here working on a thesis project has gone to New Zealand to fulfil his dream of becoming a special makeup artist.　大橋将史君卒業制作の作業中。彼は（０４’卒イケダゼミ）はスペシャルメークアップアーチストを目指してニュウージランドへ行った。

Yuhi Kazama putting a finishing touch on one of his thesis project piece. Kazama has received a full grant to study art in Germany. 風間雄飛君（０５卒’イケダゼミ）は卒業後中島ゼミと東京造形大学の大学院で版画を学んだ。最近聞いた情報によるとドイツで留学できる大金つきの賞をもらい、ドイツで美術を学んでいるらしい。

As soon as I learned from a New Year letter that one of the Dohto University graduates has gone to Paris, France for a post graduate study in art, I read in mail that another is hurrying to get aboard a plane to Venice from airport in London and left me at that. Apparently he is going to attend a graduate school in England within week and is taking a tour of Italy before the school opens.

For some reason there seems to be a mini trend to go abroad for study or practice art among some of the students that I have taught at Dohto University in Japan. Not that Japan is culturally dead. There's plenty of art activities in Japan and standard of modern art is very high there. It seems some left because they might have thought their personality and art style fits better oversea and thereby have better chance to flourish. And then there are others who probably have thought they may learn new things from a foreign school and perhaps, a change of scenery may inspire them more. Still others such as Masa Ohashi left for other countries for a purpose that can be attained better in other countries. In his case, Masa left Japan couple years ago for New Zealand to see if he can become a special makeup artist. So far as far as I know, there seems to be one graduate in France, one in Germany, one in Holland, one in New Zealand, and two in England. There's none in US and I won't go over the reason, but I hope in near future there would be few.

Isao Umeda has recently moved to England to attend a graduate school in England. Here he is giving a performance while exhibiting work in Nagano Japan.　梅田力君 は今年の一月からイギリスの大学院入学。上の写真は長野の高校を教えていたころ、個展をひらいた時のものでギターをひいているのが彼。

お正月の便りでパリへ卒業生が絵を学ぶために行ったと聞いたすぐあとメールで別な学生がイギリスの大学院（？）へ一月に入学し、大学の授業が始まる前の観光なのか、今ベニス行きの飛行機に乗り遅れるから失礼というメセージが来た。

何故か最近ミ海外へ行き、美術活動するのが道都大学の卒業生の間でミニートレンドであるようだ。日本の美術文化が貧しいからではない。むしろ、私が見たところ近代美術に関しては結構日本のレベル高いと思う。海外で活動している道都の卒業生たちの学生のころを思い出すとみんなエネルギッシュな性格の持ち主だ。イギリスに移住している佐々木エミリなどこの点、飛びぬいていた。中では彼らたちの作品や性格から見ても、海外のほうにあっているような人たちが多い。それと大橋将史君のように、特別な目的で海外へ行った卒業生もいる。彼のばあい、ペシャルメークアップアーチストを目指してニュウージランドに二年以上前に移住した。あと海外へ行く魅力はヨーロッパの伝統や外国のちがう雰囲気が魅力のよう。大変だっと思うが、新しいことを学びながら刺激を受ける彼らたち、ちょっとうらやましい。子供たちの才能を信じ、伸ばそうとと応援している親たちがいるからでのトレンドだ。

Emiri Sasaki has been living and actively making art in England for several years. She recently moved to a town that retains some traditional English scenery. Here she has begun teaching art to kids, and married an Englishman. Above are photos of her most recent home project of repairing a garden wall.

佐々木エミリ（９９卒ナットリゼミ）は卒業後すぐイギリスに行き、ロンドンあたりで美術活動していた。最近は古風な風景の町に住み、そこでイギリス人と結婚し、子供たちに美術を教えているらしい。彼女の昨年の家のプロジェクトは庭の石の壁の修理で上の写真はそれを語っている。

Nakajima Print Seminar Still Going Strong 「中島プリントゼミー今もあいかわらず活動的｝

For many years, Nakajima silk print seminar has been the pride of art and design department at Dohto University in the suburb of Sapporo Japan where I taught sculpture before returning to Oregon. Its silk screen print program is probably one of the strongest, if not the best in entire Japan. Each year its students and graduates participate in numerous exhibitions and win many regional, national and even international awards in print competitions. Few years ago, there was one, Shuhei-kun who even won the grand prize in international competition in India with an award of trip to there. Together with professor Katsuhiro Naito, who is one of the leading lithograph printer in northern Japan teaching lithograph and etching and young stars, Izumon Mikami teaching dyeing and woodcut print and Morisako-kun teaching illustration, Dohto University probably has the best print program in northern Japan. I hope school realizes that and give them full support.

The heart of Nakajima seminar is its huge, annual seminar exhibition and photo above shows the recent seminar exhibition and gathering of students at Nakajima seminar room. When I was at Dohto, Nakajima seminar was almost always filled with students that its almost like they were working and partying at the same time. And looking at the photos that Mai Mai Sugimoto sent me lately, that has not changed.

私がオレゴンに帰る前教えていた道都大学の美術部でもっとも活躍していたのは中島プリントゼミだった。おそらく、この分野では全国でも最も優れたプログラムか少なくてもその一つだろう。　毎年中島ゼミの学生や卒業生たちは様々な展示会に参加したり、、地方や国内そして国際のプリント大会にも参加し、多くの賞をもらっている。数年前はインドの国際大会で大賞をもらった学生もいた。そのゼミの中心活動がゼミ展で今年も１２月に開いたらしい（上の写真）。私が道都で彫刻を教えていたころは中島ゼミ室にはいつも学生たちが集まっており、パーティをしながら仕事をしているようににぎやかで生徒たちは楽しんで制作しているようだった。ある札幌の教育大学から卒業後シルクプリントを学びに来学生は「毎日が祭りの中で作業しているようだ」とどう反応すればいいのかわからないように言っていた。最近、卒業生の杉本マイから送ってきた写真（上）を見ると昔とかわらないようだ。中島先生も元気でいるよう。

岡島秀夫先生のトラの年賀の水彩プリント、習字はたぶん奥さんの静子さんが書いたものだろう

I've received a photo and card from two people from Japan that deals with New year. One a photo of one of my former students from Dohto University, Nozomi Sakae(class of 2009) saying goodbye to year 2009 by bowing while wearing a cow outfit as year 2009 was the year of cow. She still keeps very close in touch with me. The other a card made of water color paint that depicts tiger as this year is the year of tiger. It was painted by Dr. Hideo Okajima who was a former president of Dohto Jr. College and a dean of agriculture department of Hokkaido University. He is a very close friend of mine as we used to go sketching and visit museums and galleries in Hokkaido together. Although Dr. Okajima is in mid 80's, as can be seen in this painting, he still paints superbly. Calligraphy on the right although unmentioned is probably is done by his wife, Shizuko who is a very accomplished calligrapher in her own right.

Hopefully, this year and this coming decade will be a very good one for all of us.

栄さん、２００９年ごくろうさまと。。。

二人の親友から年末挨拶の写真とカードが届いた。一つは道都大学卒業生（安田ゼミ２００９）の栄希さんからで彼女は牛の服装でご苦労さんの挨拶して２００９年にお別れを伝えた写真を送ってくれた。もう一つは、水彩でトラの絵を描いて２０１０年を迎えた岡島秀夫先生からのカードだ。岡島先生は今は退職していられるが、長い間道都大学の短大の学長を勤め、それ以前は北大の農業学部長を勤めた科学者だ。水彩とスケッチが大変上手な方だ。昔、私はよく岡島先生と一緒にスケッチにいったり、ギャラリーや美術館を見学したりしていた大変親しい仲間でありながら、恩を受けた方だ。このトラの絵でわかると思うが８０代に入っても大変素晴らしい絵を描いている。書いてはいないが、おそらく右の習字は奥さんの静子さんのものだろう。

どうか新年とこれからの１０年、素晴らしい時代を迎えることを願いたい。

I've just received a Christmas greeting card from England through e-mail. Its from Emily Sasaki who graduated from Dohto University back in 1999, and have been active as an artist in England since. The above work is this card. I'm happy to announce that this year she has married an Englishman, and will be back in Japan over the holiday season.

道都大学を９９年に卒業後イギリスに住んで美術活動している佐々木エミリからクリスマスカードがメールで送ってきました。上の作品がそうです。　彼女はめでたく今年イギリス人と結婚し、クリスマスとお正月を日本で過ごすとのことです。

道都大学で講師としてプリントなどを教えているイズモン（三上いずみさん）が１０年ぶりに個展を札幌市の門馬アネクスギャラリーで開きました。この期間イズモンは二人展のほかグループ展などに多く参加しています。　この活動的な芸術家はこのブローグでも前のポストで紹介しています。シルクスクリーンのほか木版画、イラスト、絵画、マンガ、それと彼女の母と共同で制作しているぬいもののソフトスコルプチャーなど様々な種類の材料と幅広い美術・工芸方法で表現しているようです。

私が思うのではイズモンはどちらかと言うと自分の想像の世界を造りあげていくタイプの芸術家のようです。その世界には面白い、キュートでありながら、少し怖いオリジナルなキャラクタたちがが存在していてそれをマンガやイラストや版画などで表しているようです。今回は主に版画のパターンとしての作品が多いようです。クラゲやクラゲの一生に関係する物たちをパターンとして描いているようで、そのパターンの大胆さ、面白さとオリジナリティには毎回のように関心しています。

１０年前の個展を見て以来、私も彼女の作品の大ファンで次何を制作するのかいつも楽しみにしています。今回のポストで紹介している作品の写真は私の教え子でイズモンの友人のマイマイがイズモンの許可を得て送ってくれたものです。

Izumon ( Izumi Mikami) is a guest lecturer at Dohto University in Sapporo Japan where she teaches classes in dyeing and printing. As an artist, besides creating works in fabric, she also does woodcut and silk prints, paintings, illustrations, picture books and comics. Izumon is one of those artist who likes to create her own world of imagination where cute, but at times deadly characters seem to roam. Her work has been mentioned in this blog previously. Please check earlier posts.

In this particular exhibition in a narrow, white wall gallery space next to a cafe restaurant, she explores the life of jellyfish character in silk screen prints and in soft sculpture form in her distinct way. Red dyed pieces especially, for me is striking. Apparently each piece can combine with others in any direction so that one can add and arrange these pieces to elongate up, down, diagonal, straight... any direction as artist desires. As usual, Izumon amazes me with bold but humorous, original designs.

I have been a fan of hers since I first saw her solo exhibition ten years ago, and I always look forward to her next piece: she always presents me surprises. These photos in this post were sent to me by my former student and friend of Izumon, MaiMai with Izumon's permission.
