"Selleck's Humdingers" 「

Group of Sculptures

Dave Selleck considers himself a painter, but he makes delightful sculptures which I would like to share in this post. Here are some of his works that were shown few months ago at Blackfish.

"Balzac" 「

"Nincompoop" 「

Dave's sculptures are type that I was interested in making myself one time, but never did. This is realizing personal image into sculpture by utilizing materials found in modern urban home, but using a form found in African sculptures- that is having wonderful, rhythmic mixture of concave/convex forms. Well Dave's work is exactly that. Figures and images that might appear in his wonderful paintings are realized in these sculptures. Such materials as brush, bell button, hoses and wooden planks from furniture and other board made materials are used to make these spontaneous, assemblage works. He stains and paints on many of these sculptures and that really make them come alive. Whether be painting or sculpture, Dave creates a distinct world that is home to whimsical, loveable creatures.

"Twinkle, twinkle, zig zag- Mario's exhuberant paintings" 「

View of Mario Caoile's Exhibition from gallery entrance

My artist friend from olden days, Mario Caoile shared December exhibition space of Blackfish Gallery with me. Mario showed mostly paintings, but there were three painted sculptures that were also exhibited. These were mostly abstract paintings though one can see a shade of dog or figure like forms here and there.

Here, Mario's adjusting microphone for video shooting. Displaying from left are paintings"Terra Illumina"and"Next Step"

"Terra Illumina" 「

I have heard people comment Mario's works with words like energetic, musical, illuminating, playful, spontaneous and labyrinth like when describing Mario's recent works, and these I think are appropriate. Title of works like "Detour","Zig Zag" Twinkle", "Terra Illumina", "Doggone it", "Yes Kangaroo" shows his awareness of effects of his works and also the playfulness . With this group of Mario's works, rather than think over deeply about what he tries to express, I enjoy most just absorbing the spirit Mario's paintings emit.

"East& Wes&" 「

Detail of "East&West&"「

This "East&West&"piece is probably my favorite painting in this exhibition show though I like "Next Step" and couple others nearly as well. It has for me a powerful presence which appeals to me greatly, but is hard to describe.

Another thing I sense from this exhibition is that though each painting in the show is piece by itself, I sense all of the piece as one piece as though its one whole installation work. The colors and forms in all the work is similar and provides unity and small pieces near the floor of the gallery ties individual works together. But for me the main reason is the feeling I get that all the work- reflect lights, music, and thunderous energy towards the center of gallery.

"Sculpture Take Up Your Bed"[

In the past, Mario use to weld scraps like bed springs together to form a metal sculpture. Lately, I see him revive these works by repainting them. I think these metal sculptures are appealing just with forms by themselves. But painting over gave additional interest. In fact Mario's painted sculptures are among my favorite of all Mario's repertoire. I really like them a lot!

Liquid in Movement-Steve's Kinetic Scupture 「

Steve Soihl's Time Variable Volume Exhibition at Blackfish

Steve Sohil is a friend of mine from graduate student days at Portland State University. He was much more experience in the art field than I at the time; and while student there, he was involved in a project of establishing a new co-op gallery. Early in the spring of 1979, couple months before opening the Blackfish, he invited me to join the gallery for which I am forever grateful.

At the time, Steve was working on a pylon like form that consissted of rich, deep layers of rainbow color polyester resin coating. He later moved on to a liquid kinetic sculpture that involved chambers of colored oil whose volume goes through constant change as liquids flow from one chamber to another. For some reason, this stage didn't last long. As for as I know, for a long time, Steve went on to do water colors and etchings of shrubs, flowers, and weeds. While I enjoy these pieces, when I returned to Portland from Japan, I was happy to see that Steve have return to do kinetic sculptures. And I see that Steve has gone and is continuing to go far beyond where he left off in the 80's. This "Time Variable Volume Exhibition"that was held at Blackfish this June exemplifies this.

In these works, different colored volumes of oils flow from one chamber to another through inclination and gear motor. The artist states that the interest in these works is pure formal. Beauty of geometrical forms, colors of moving oils and resulting lights and shadows through movement in time, and resulting tranquil effect from viewing the work is what Steve seems to be after, and I believe has achieved.

"Time Variable Volume"

With this piece, the volume of oil flows from one chamber to another as motor slowly moves at a five minute interval in circular motion on a tilted platform. The movement of oil from one pyramidal chamber to another is the result of this tilt. Also to note is the shadow effect and wonderful geometrical form of this piece.

Suspended Elements- Tilted Shaft 1

Suspended Elements- Tilted Shaft 2 (detail)

Steve exhibited two kinetic sculptures (above) that were like Calder's mobiles suspended from the ceiling. These however are moved by motor, and are rotated periodically. These tube like forms are connected to shafts up above which are inclined. The inclination makes various oils in each pieces move from one end to another so that color liquids are in constant motion. Support Element #1 even have a solar panel connected to provide electricity.

"Rotating Pyramidal Forms"

In this installation work which is my favorite of all Steve's work, three separate sculptural pieces are set on a wall with gear motors set on the other side so the pieces move around. There is another device that provides a beam of light which hits the moving pyramidal and tubular forms.
The result is a constant moving variable shape lights and shadows that appears and disappears on the side and end walls. And the effect is very meditative.Besides enjoying the movement of lights and shadows, one can derive aesthetic pleasure from the form and movement of these sculptural pieces. Because time element is vital in understanding and appreciating Steve's work, and especially this one, I recommend highly for you to see the u-tube that is installed in Blackfish blog page. Here's the address:

http://blackfishgallery.blogspot.com/

Or you may just push Blackfish on my bloglist shown on the right side. Iit's a superb exhibition.

"New Home for Pete" 「

"Pete" with other works by Paul Missal

"Pete" 96"x144" acrylic on canvas

Paul Missal, who is a realistic painter is currently exhibiting his paintings at Blackfish Gallery along with his friends, Nancy Lindburg and William Owen. Among the painting that Paul has exhibited is a huge depiction of horse "Pete". This painting was originally exhibited in Paul's solo exhibition at the original Blackfish gallery space in I believe 1980, thirty years ago. If my memory serves right, this 1980 exhibition was the most popular exhibition of all the early shows at Blackfish in the years I was there: 1979-83. And "Pete" was the center piece. The exhibition had a large write up in Oregonian and consequently drew all kinds of people- perhaps including animal lovers that usually don't come to see a contemporary art. From photos of work in progress which Paul displayed and was also printed in Oregonian article, with this painting, he first painted skeletal structure of Pete, and then covered it with muscles and ligaments before, he completed with skins and hairs. Because of size and beauty of the painting, the work is much more impressive viewing actual than the image shown above. The background of rich, thick coating of Titanium white appears to brings out the subtle brown coloring of the horse and adds to the warmth and nobility of the piece.

For me, the most attractive element in Paul's paintings is a warm, luminous light that is reflected in many of his works. For me this light expresses, warmth, peace, hope and kindness- all things positive. The warm light, I believe, reflects Paul the person as well as he is a very generous man. Paul has offered lots of assistance and advices to me over the years, and judging from what I have heard, to many others as well.

The other major painting in the show " Woman" also displays this warm light.

I am happy to say that " Pete" after thirty years at Paul's studio found a new home, as the painting was bought by Portland Art Museum. So next time when I see "Pete" it will be at the museum, a fitting home for "Pete".

Visiting Jim Goin's Studio 「

An outdoor covered area of Jim Gion's studio

Jim Gion is a sculptor friend from olden days. In fact I knew him from the time I was studying architecture at Oregon State University. I took my first sculpture class there as an elective class back in 1971. At the time I never thought that sculpture would be my profession in years to come. Jim was a senior then: I believe fresh from Vietnam. He was an outstanding sculpture student there at OSU at the time I was there; sort of like a chief assistant to the professor, and somehow I got to know him. Seven years later, while I was a graduate student getting MFA in sculpture at PSU, we met again. Jim returned from teaching English in Japanese University and decided to take take sculpture class at PSU while resettling in Oregon. He probably just wanted to use the fine bronze facility at the University.

Fortune has it I met Jim again in 2008 just few weeks after I returned from Japan. I found out that he has been making a living as sculptor in Portland. Jim has found niche in modeling sculptures of dogs and other animals, and judging from photos and works in his studio, he must have received hundreds of commission in this genre. Recently, Jim has sculpted lions for Portland Zoo.

Above photos: Jim's commission works for owners of pet dogs

Visiting his studio in N.E section of Portland, I could see that Jim has developed his own techniques of rubber casting and clay modeling. I learned a lot in modeling and casting techniques from watching him. Besides modeling dogs and other animals, he does some abstract works and humorous pieces. However, what I'm most amazed is Jim's realistic figurative works. Jim possesses a natural feel for clay as he makes figures and portraits at an amazing speed. He can create a variety of texture with clay while catching all kinds of expressions. Watching him model clay, I had a feeling some people have a natural talent for this medium and for making a realistic sculpture. At the same time, I found that I don't. Jim says he gets most pleasure from depicting homeless people, and indeed some of his best works are those.

On my last visit, Jim showed me his recent experiment: he has been exploring the possibilities of cast paper. Jim showed me relief works that he has casted into paper praising the lightness that is contrast to his more typical works in bronze. I was interested in this a bit as possibility in my own work, but I have yet to try.

Although sculpture has gone to various directions such as abstract and conceptual, its great that there are artists like Jim Gion who are doing figurative works and works that require lots of craft as these I believe are timeless basics that will live on art trends and fashions.

Saying goodbye to year 2009 and welcoming 2010 and a new decade「2009

"Year of Tiger' watercolor print by H. Okajima

I've received a photo and card from two people from Japan that deals with New year. One a photo of one of my former students from Dohto University, Nozomi Sakae(class of 2009) saying goodbye to year 2009 by bowing while wearing a cow outfit as year 2009 was the year of cow. She still keeps very close in touch with me. The other a card made of water color paint that depicts tiger as this year is the year of tiger. It was painted by Dr. Hideo Okajima who was a former president of Dohto Jr. College and a dean of agriculture department of Hokkaido University. He is a very close friend of mine as we used to go sketching and visit museums and galleries in Hokkaido together. Although Dr. Okajima is in mid 80's, as can be seen in this painting, he still paints superbly. Calligraphy on the right although unmentioned is probably is done by his wife, Shizuko who is a very accomplished calligrapher in her own right.

Hopefully, this year and this coming decade will be a very good one for all of us.

"Life of Jellyfish" a Solo Exhibition of Work by Izumon at Monma Annex Gallery in Sapporo, Japan-「

Above- silk screen prints 「

Izumon ( Izumi Mikami) is a guest lecturer at Dohto University in Sapporo Japan where she teaches classes in dyeing and printing. As an artist, besides creating works in fabric, she also does woodcut and silk prints, paintings, illustrations, picture books and comics. Izumon is one of those artist who likes to create her own world of imagination where cute, but at times deadly characters seem to roam. Her work has been mentioned in this blog previously. Please check earlier posts.

In this particular exhibition in a narrow, white wall gallery space next to a cafe restaurant, she explores the life of jellyfish character in silk screen prints and in soft sculpture form in her distinct way. Red dyed pieces especially, for me is striking. Apparently each piece can combine with others in any direction so that one can add and arrange these pieces to elongate up, down, diagonal, straight... any direction as artist desires. As usual, Izumon amazes me with bold but humorous, original designs.

I have been a fan of hers since I first saw her solo exhibition ten years ago, and I always look forward to her next piece: she always presents me surprises. These photos in this post were sent to me by my former student and friend of Izumon, MaiMai with Izumon's permission.

Work in progress: Leaves and Branches of the Tree of Life 「作業の最中: 生命の木の枝と葉っぱ」

Here are photos of work in progress. I am currently working on several pieces of " Leaves and Branches of the Tree of Life" series for the coming newcomer's show at Blackfish Gallery in January 2010. I have done several works of similar nature in Japan, but here I am using different material in some parts. Instead of a non-firing clay, I am currently using a mixture of bamboo fiber with bonding material to shape a form around armature. You can see this on a phto of work in progress on the deck of my backyard. This bamboo material is a new material for me,and I am quit excited with its potential. Before pasting this bamboo material, in my basement studio I make armature of wire and wire mesh which becomes a frame for "leaf" part of works. After the bamboo fiber paste has dried, I complete the leaf form by laying about ten layers of muslin cloth over the frame. So my leaves are at least ten plied. Ten layers, that's a lot of work! You can see me cutting the muslin cloth to the shape of 'leaf' on the floor of another area of my studio space. Of course more works will be done before these works are completed, but that will be surprise, even to me.
