Paul Missal, who is a realistic painter is currently exhibiting his paintings at Blackfish Gallery along with his friends, Nancy Lindburg and William Owen. Among the painting that Paul has exhibited is a huge depiction of horse "Pete". This painting was originally exhibited in Paul's solo exhibition at the original Blackfish gallery space in I believe 1980, thirty years ago. If my memory serves right, this 1980 exhibition was the most popular exhibition of all the early shows at Blackfish in the years I was there: 1979-83. And "Pete" was the center piece. The exhibition had a large write up in Oregonian and consequently drew all kinds of people- perhaps including animal lovers that usually don't come to see a contemporary art. From photos of work in progress which Paul displayed and was also printed in Oregonian article, with this painting, he first painted skeletal structure of Pete, and then covered it with muscles and ligaments before, he completed with skins and hairs. Because of size and beauty of the painting, the work is much more impressive viewing actual than the image shown above. The background of rich, thick coating of Titanium white appears to brings out the subtle brown coloring of the horse and adds to the warmth and nobility of the piece.

For me, the most attractive element in Paul's paintings is a warm, luminous light that is reflected in many of his works. For me this light expresses, warmth, peace, hope and kindness- all things positive. The warm light, I believe, reflects Paul the person as well as he is a very generous man. Paul has offered lots of assistance and advices to me over the years, and judging from what I have heard, to many others as well.

The other major painting in the show " Woman" also displays this warm light.

I am happy to say that " Pete" after thirty years at Paul's studio found a new home, as the painting was bought by Portland Art Museum. So next time when I see "Pete" it will be at the museum, a fitting home for "Pete".

今ブラックフィシューギャラリーで写実的な作品を描くポールミソール氏と彼の友人、ナンシー・リンドバーグとウィリアム・オウェン氏である。ポールが展示した作品の中で馬の「ピート」の絵がある。この作品は三十年前、ブラックフィシューギャラリーが開いたばかりのころポールが彼の個展で展示したものである。私の記憶が確かであればこのポールの個展はすごく人気があり、初期のころのブラックフィシューのショーの中ではもっともお客が鑑賞した展示だった。その中でも『ピート」は中心作であった。ポートランドの新聞、「オレゴニアン」に一ページ「ピート」とポールの展覧会についての記事が書かれ、多くの普段現代美術を鑑賞しそうもないようなお客が来た。ポールが「ピート」の制作中の写真などが新聞にも展覧会でも紹介され、これによるとポールはピートの骨組みを描いた。そしてそのあと筋肉などを描いて、さいごにその上に皮膚や毛などを描いてようだ。残念ながら、この作品は大きさと絵の気品な美しさが感じなのだが、写真ではとても実物を見るように感じない。何回も重ねてリッチなタイタニアムの白色が馬の様々な茶色を引き立って、上品な作品にしあげている。


ポールの作品の中で私がもっとも好むのは彼の作品によく見られる、暖かい光で、平和、ホープ、優しさと暖かさを感じさせる。ポールの性格を現すようだ。彼は昔からとても親切で良く私に色々と教えて
くれる。噂話を聞くと私だけでなく多くの人々に対しても同じよう。その暖かい性格が作品にもあらわれているようだ。この展覧会のもう一つの目玉作品、「ウーマン」もこの暖かい光で包まれている。

最初展示されて三十年、「ピート」も新しい家に引越しするらしい。ポートランド美術館がこの作品を買ったらしい。こんど私が「ピート」とであうときは美術館らしい。「ピート」にふさわしい家だ。
