Autumn Scenery of Dohto University Art Studio Building 「道都大学アトリエ棟の秋の風景」

I have just received a photo of Dohto University art studio building in Hokkaido, Japan. It was sent by my Japanese friend, Mr. Yonezawa who just happened to pass by the area with his car. He wanted to show me the beauty of Fall forest with colored leaves of landscape around the school. The photo brought me back memories of beautiful Fall scenery of Hokkaido and of my times in this studio building. My office and sculpture room was on the upper floor, third and fourth window groups from left. The front view of the building has changed since I left. It use to be all brick red color, but now I see areas of white facade.

  2. Thanks Helen. I was lucky with the location of my studio space. Sun hits the right end of this building so in the summer the class room at that side gets very hot while I enjoyed relatively cool temperature. The building was away from the rest of the campus so I got away with wearing t-shirts and shorts in the summer while most of the other teachers wore suits.

Being close to nature there were some memorable experience with encounters with animals and insects. One early spring morning, when much of the snow has melted from the forest, I saw otter or otter like creature coming by a small river on the back side of the building and jumped into the river. Moment later, otter came out of the river with fish in his mouth. Otter apparently is better fisherman than me (another fish story-laugh).

Another time while I was carving a small piece of walnut, fox couple came just a few feet away from me and perhaps satisfied with their curiosity they then disappear.

And lastly while I was modeling relatively realistic sculpture of swan, large Japanese ibis flew pass my sculpture studio window. The bird came back and perched on the branch of wood for about twenty minutes on the other side of the river directly opposite from where I have sat my sculpture piece. Seeing that I felt a sense of artistic triumph!

There are many other nature stories, but I better get back to work.
