Outdoor installation, "Face Fruits and the Giant Leaf of the Tree of Life"
About 8'x9'

For the next exhibition, I am thinking of presenting a new version of face fruits. It seems every three and half years, I get a desire to make a whole set of face fruit sculptures. Face fruits are one of several sub series themes within my Tree of Life work, but a major one as they are the main product of the Tree. They represent each individual human being, and their ripening symbolizes a human growth. This time I am thinking of combining these face fruits with branches of gingko wood so as to make them look as they are hanging from the branches. As I keep changing in the process, I am not sure how the final product will look, but anyway this is the direction I am thinking and have begin to realize.

In past works, face fruits were made of clay, but this time I am attempting to make them with fiber and glue mixed material that I have used to make recent 'Scene series' pieces. Because of the difference in material quality, and also difference in armature the finish product will probably differ.

For armature instead of rounded styrofoam that was reinforced with cloth, this time as you can see from photos below, I am using various size wires and fencing material. Afterward these were filled with figlue (fiber/glue material0. which I just pen-named for simplicity sake.

Pile of gingko wood with some thread pattern areas. I have originally thought of showing these branches for my last exhibition, but I have saved them for the coming one where I hope to combine these with face fruits.

Visiting Jim Goin's Studio 「

Jim Gion is a sculptor friend from olden days. In fact I knew him from the time I was studying architecture at Oregon State University. I took my first sculpture class there as an elective class back in 1971. At the time I never thought that sculpture would be my profession in years to come. Jim was a senior then: I believe fresh from Vietnam. He was an outstanding sculpture student there at OSU at the time I was there; sort of like a chief assistant to the professor, and somehow I got to know him. Seven years later, while I was a graduate student getting MFA in sculpture at PSU, we met again. Jim returned from teaching English in Japanese University and decided to take take sculpture class at PSU while resettling in Oregon. He probably just wanted to use the fine bronze facility at the University.

Fortune has it I met Jim again in 2008 just few weeks after I returned from Japan. I found out that he has been making a living as sculptor in Portland. Jim has found niche in modeling sculptures of dogs and other animals, and judging from photos and works in his studio, he must have received hundreds of commission in this genre. Recently, Jim has sculpted lions for Portland Zoo.

Above photos: Jim's commission works for owners of pet dogs

Visiting his studio in N.E section of Portland, I could see that Jim has developed his own techniques of rubber casting and clay modeling. I learned a lot in modeling and casting techniques from watching him. Besides modeling dogs and other animals, he does some abstract works and humorous pieces. However, what I'm most amazed is Jim's realistic figurative works. Jim possesses a natural feel for clay as he makes figures and portraits at an amazing speed. He can create a variety of texture with clay while catching all kinds of expressions. Watching him model clay, I had a feeling some people have a natural talent for this medium and for making a realistic sculpture. At the same time, I found that I don't. Jim says he gets most pleasure from depicting homeless people, and indeed some of his best works are those.

On my last visit, Jim showed me his recent experiment: he has been exploring the possibilities of cast paper. Jim showed me relief works that he has casted into paper praising the lightness that is contrast to his more typical works in bronze. I was interested in this a bit as possibility in my own work, but I have yet to try.

Although sculpture has gone to various directions such as abstract and conceptual, its great that there are artists like Jim Gion who are doing figurative works and works that require lots of craft as these I believe are timeless basics that will live on art trends and fashions.

Yuki's Wedding Book Cover Design 「

I am very happy to say one of my former seminar student, Yuki Sakou (class of 04) got married recently. She designed the cover for her wedding book, and in it she used a photo of my sculpture piece which I have shown in January exhibition at Blackfish gallery. I am pleased to say an angel image of my work appears to be very appropriate with the subject of wedding and works well in her cover design. The cover reminds me of poster Yuki (yuki is snow in Japanese) designed for 2004 Ikeda sculpture seminar exhibition. 2004 group including junior seminar students was an exceptionally talented and energetic group, and many of them appear to take interesting directions after graduation. I hope them further success. And I hope Yuki and her husband a continual happiness.

As soon as I learned from a New Year letter that one of the Dohto University graduates has gone to Paris, France for a post graduate study in art, I read in mail that another is hurrying to get aboard a plane to Venice from airport in London and left me at that. Apparently he is going to attend a graduate school in England within week and is taking a tour of Italy before the school opens.

For some reason there seems to be a mini trend to go abroad for study or practice art among some of the students that I have taught at Dohto University in Japan. Not that Japan is culturally dead. There's plenty of art activities in Japan and standard of modern art is very high there. It seems some left because they might have thought their personality and art style fits better oversea and thereby have better chance to flourish. And then there are others who probably have thought they may learn new things from a foreign school and perhaps, a change of scenery may inspire them more. Still others such as Masa Ohashi left for other countries for a purpose that can be attained better in other countries. In his case, Masa left Japan couple years ago for New Zealand to see if he can become a special makeup artist. So far as far as I know, there seems to be one graduate in France, one in Germany, one in Holland, one in New Zealand, and two in England. There's none in US and I won't go over the reason, but I hope in near future there would be few.

Isao Umeda has recently moved to England to attend a graduate school in England. Here he is giving a performance while exhibiting work in Nagano Japan.

Nakajima Print Seminar Still Going Strong  「中島プリントゼミー今もあいかわらず活動的}

Professor Nakajima walking around the dyeing section of recent seminar exhibition

Student gathering at Nakajima seminar room

For many years, Nakajima silk print seminar has been the pride of art and design department at Dohto University in the suburb of Sapporo Japan where I taught sculpture before returning to Oregon. Its silk screen print program is probably one of the strongest, if not the best in entire Japan. Each year its students and graduates participate in numerous exhibitions and win many regional, national and even international awards in print competitions. Few years ago, there was one, Shuhei-kun who even won the grand prize in international competition in India with an award of trip to there. Together with professor Katsuhiro Naito, who is one of the leading lithograph printer in northern Japan teaching lithograph and etching and young stars, Izumon Mikami teaching dyeing and woodcut print and Morisako-kun teaching illustration, Dohto University probably has the best print program in northern Japan. I hope school realizes that and give them full support.

The heart of Nakajima seminar is its huge, annual seminar exhibition and photo above shows the recent seminar exhibition and gathering of students at Nakajima seminar room. When I was at Dohto, Nakajima seminar was almost always filled with students that its almost like they were working and partying at the same time. And looking at the photos that Mai Mai Sugimoto sent me lately, that has not changed.

Saying goodbye to year 2009 and welcoming 2010 and a new decade「2009

"Year of Tiger' watercolor print by H. Okajima

I've received a photo and card from two people from Japan that deals with New year. One a photo of one of my former students from Dohto University, Nozomi Sakae(class of 2009) saying goodbye to year 2009 by bowing while wearing a cow outfit as year 2009 was the year of cow. She still keeps very close in touch with me. The other a card made of water color paint that depicts tiger as this year is the year of tiger. It was painted by Dr. Hideo Okajima who was a former president of Dohto Jr. College and a dean of agriculture department of Hokkaido University. He is a very close friend of mine as we used to go sketching and visit museums and galleries in Hokkaido together. Although Dr. Okajima is in mid 80's, as can be seen in this painting, he still paints superbly. Calligraphy on the right although unmentioned is probably is done by his wife, Shizuko who is a very accomplished calligrapher in her own right.

Hopefully, this year and this coming decade will be a very good one for all of us.

Christmas Greeting from England 「

Christmas Greeting from Emily Sasaki 「

I've just received a Christmas greeting card from England through e-mail. Its from Emily Sasaki who graduated from Dohto University back in 1999, and have been active as an artist in England since. The above work is this card. I'm happy to announce that this year she has married an Englishman, and will be back in Japan over the holiday season.

This is the continuation of posts on work in progress for the series, " Everyday Scenes from Leaves and Branches of the Tree of Life".

Now that modeling of figures and other forms are completed, the threading process begins. Cotton threads and cotton cords are glued onto certain parts of figures such as clothes to form a pattern. After that each different parts are assembled onto large leaves and branch form of the wall pieces. As seen above, various parts are placed on the shelf waiting to be completed and for drying purpose. Afterward, as shown on the photo below, threading process continues as thread patterns are formed around the edge of leaves. Later, towards the last stage, this inner part of leaves will be decorated with pattern as well. These then will be coated with Liquitex varnishes for protection and finishing touch.

Work in Progres: Leaves and Branches of the Tree of Life 「生命の木の枝と葉っぱからの場面」の作品制作中パート#3:モデリング

Fig. 1Wire armature is completed and is ready to be modeled

Fig.2 On another piece, figure of lady is being modeled with a cotton fiber 「

Fig. 3 A snake and beetle forms along with lady figure are being modeled in this piece to create a story.

After getting the armature made of wires completed, these figures and other forms were filled and modeled with material I have made by combining cotton or bamboo fiber with glue. The combination results in a material that is both soft and harden. This is something new as I have used clay as modeling material previously in Japan.
The work has looks of what I see in a floral parade except of limited color. And like forms in a floral parade I found it best to make forms simple and clear and avoid details. Figures I found naturally tends to get plump which is a pleasant change from slimmer proportioned figures I use to make out of clay.
