Collaboration Work on Michizane「

スボーダ氏の音楽 「Migrating Message, Concerto for Xylophone and Tape」 やティルドン氏の彫刻・絵はムーチャント氏の詩「Notes for Time」に合わして完成されたよう。

1.Flight into Exile (追放され都を脱出)
3.The Old Fisherman (年寄りの漁師)

In February of this year, sculptor/painter, Steve Tilden had a unique collaboration exhibition with poet, Paul Merchant and composer, Tomas Svoboda on a theme of ancient Japanese poet/ politician, Sugawara no Michizane ( left). Since I am neither an authority on poetry and music I will comment mostly on the visual part of this collaboration.

Michizane was born in 845 and died in 903, a period when emperor and nobility controlled the Japanese government. He was a superbly
learned man who is now deified as sort of patron of scholars and students. Many students in Japan pay homage to his shrines prior to taking entrance exams for blessings.

Michizane also was one of the top minister in the Heian period Japanese government but was caught in a power struggle and unfairly sent into exile on the island of Kyushu. This collaboration artwork appears to express the state of Michizane at this period of his life. It is a state full of grief, wrath, longing and contemplation; and poetry, music and artwork by these three artists fully express this. At least that was the feeling I have received after listening to their presentation of the work a night before the opening of the exhibition.

(Right after I went to Japan, twenty years ago, I took an introduction to ancient poetry reading/singing. And the fist poem I had to learn to 'sing' was the famous one by same Michizane that goes " On this night, year ago...' The poem as I recall was full of sentiment and mood that I found in these collaboration works.)

The presentation included Svoboda's contemporary music composition, "Migrating Message, Concerto for xylophone and Tape,op.195" and Merchant's poetry reading. Paul Merchant divided his "Notes for Time"poetry into three parts:

1. Flight into Exile
2. Cadenza
3. The Old Fisherman

Svoboda appeared to have divided his work in a similar fashion. Steve, on the other hand divided his work by different way of interpretation. He expressed "Flight into Exile" part through a representative painting (see below). But Steve sort of used semi-abstract, symbolic images of welded pieces on paper collage background to illustrate some lines from "Cadenza' and "The Old Fisherman" parts of Merchant's poem. And he , lastly interpreted the musical composition of Tomas Svoboda through various abstract squares that hung from the ceiling and placed on various places of the wall. So we have here in Steve's exhbition a display of three different ways of visually capturing music and poetry. Whether this way of mixing three ways of interpretation was successful or not, I do not know, but it sure was interesting, and must have been challenging for the artist.

With Flight into Exile part of the poem, Steve decided to paint a huge painting of the scene of Michizane riding horse to exile in sunset with darkness slowly engulfing the sky (below). I was at Steve's studio when he began to paint over several wooden panels that composed the painting. He paints with acrylic paint that is mixed with shellac in a distinct fashion peculiar to him that seems to me to bring out certain surface texture and brightness. Steve also picked peak and low points of hills and mountains according to the rhythm of Svoboda's composition. Apparently, Steve hoped this would harmonize the rhythm of pictorial composition with rhythm of musical composition.

Though the painting's very sparse, with only point of interest in the entire painting being Michizane and horse, and perhaps whitish moon that provides a lovely counterpoint to the horse,
in terms of mood this vast sparseness makes the work very effective. I m overwhelmed with feeling of downtrodden loneliness, and with the enclosing darkness as picture move towards right, a sense of foreboding gloominess . However, the scene of horse eating flowers not only slows down the movement but also seems to brings out a warm feeling that makes me empathize with Michizane's plight ( see the detail below). As Michizane seem to contemplate as the horse eats, I too ponder.

As stated earlier, Steve I believe tried to capture the poetry lines of Paul Merchant's using the symbolic welded sculptural forms on collage papered board. He presented six pieces of this kind of work, and these for me are visually stimulating as hard, solid, and dark forms of steel go very well with contrasting light, warm transparency of wrapping paper collage. Pencil writings on works add another dimension. The welded forms are not pure abstract, they are bit symbolic and is probably closer to early form of 'Kanji' or the Chinese characters where you can detect the forms from where the characters were derived. For example, you can see the boat like form and shape that seem to express tears in the piece "And now I hear..."

"And now I hear the old man has given up fishing
his little boat, he says is filling up with tears

Lastly, Steve attempts to capture part of Svoboda's musical composition by having randomly placed reddish painted steel squares combined with larger darker squares that rhythmicaly hung from the ceiling. Though seeing large sheets of metal hung from the ceiling is exciting, this was for me the least successful of the works simply because visually there just wasn't enough interesting forms in the piece and likewise, the overall composition of the piece did not generate excitement. However when seeing the whole exhibition, with representative painting and symbolic shapes of wall pieces, the simplicity of square forms and abstract composition works well, giving rest to the eye while adding a variety to the whole exhibition.

Thoughts and Ideas Behind Everyday Scene Works: Archangel Raphael 「

"Empathy not Books Cure Myopia"Set of three pieces

Sculpture part

Description of scene in the sculpture piece above

In my recent works archangel Raphael has appeared couple times. As noted in my artist statement posted on my last exhibition, these works are not intended as a religious work. Angels and other biblical figures, various myth figures were used because of their strong archetypal imagery that I felt made my stories more effective and easier to understand. My apology to anyone who maybe offended in my usage of these figures.

With these works, ink drawings on paper and smaller, descriptions of 'everyday scenes' of sculptures also in ink on paper and sculptures together make up a single piece of work. Each sculpture is my comment on politic, culture, economy and religion. I used odd characters such as worms, goldfish, miniature dinosaurs in hypothetical tree of life setting with biblical figures and mythical figures to create rather, whimsical and maybe bizzare stories. Using odd characters like worms I felt help to lighten some of my comments.

In piece" Empathy, Not Books Heal Myopia" shown above the illustration part shows Archangel Gabriel visiting Goldwyn the popeye goldfish and informing him that despite all his learning, he is suffering from myopia just as Archangel Rapahel, the healing angel drops by. The sculpture piece depicts Raphael, with his curing power, temporary curing Goldwyn of myopia, a diseas of narrow mindedness. Here archangel tells Goldwyn, he needs to empathetic, that is be in a position of others in order to fully recover from this illness of narrow mind. But for a comfort, he reminds that Goldwyn is not the only one with myopia, to a certain degree, all of us has it.

With this piece, after I made a leaf and branch part of the work, looking at the shape of base composition, I thought of a winged figure, a flying reptile would be fine. However, a popeye goldfish piece that didn't work out in other work looked great on the left side of this piece, and before I knew it I had an angel instead of something from JurassicPark. And the goldfish became a vehicle for my thoughts and opinions.

After I returned to US in 08', I read and watched news on tv and papers considerably as it was a great period of turmoil in politics and economy all around the world. Watching, I was amazed to hear what I felt was narrow minded views of supposedly intelligent, well educated people all over the world. Most of us including myself are narrow minded, self-centered and self-righteous, but to a degree. When I hear of women in a country in Asia getting beaten up or killed for adultery by their relatives, or kids getting executed in some Middle Eastern countries, I wonder where empathy, feeling for others' has left us. Things are no better here in US as well as it seems despite their strong beliefs in words in Bible, some leaders from bible belt are so much into war and making money and not into helping out those in need as their christian teaching asks of them. These and many more were fodder for works in this exhibition.

With second piece, Archangel Raphael Healing the Wounded Earth", below, in the illustration all the living things except ignorant mankind are requesting the Tree of Life for help, and Archangel Raphael comes forth to heal the Earth. Archangel warns though that although Earth will be cure, longer its unattended, the greater the illness and therefore greater the force needed for cure and greater the AFTER EFFECT.

This piece was the last piece that I begin to work among the work in the last exhibition. As I begin to realize some of my works were little bit negative or bit cynical, I wanted to end the series with positive note, so I came up with Archangel Raphael rescuing the earth. However, I could not help, but add some warning.

Here too, I was irritated reading paper that so many people in US were still skeptical of 'global warming' , and refuse to accept the notion of damage that mankind is doing to earth. Though I believe nature and earth will keep on existing, certain adjustment will be made to accommodate what mankind has done and is doing. This accommodation is both the Cure and Aftereffect that I am worry about and I cry out in this work of hope and warning.

The illustration is sort of prologue to the sculpture piece. Here archangel Raphael, the healing angel is approaching the part of Tree of Life call Earth. He comes because all the living things other than ignorant mankind are asking for his help as Earth is being wounded.

Detail of sculpture piece.

On the Light Side: Greeting Cards from Mai Mai 「

2006 Greeting Card

"Scribble drawing on paper".
Mai Mai likes to scribble her characters all over the place, especially on cardboard storage boxes and on scratch papers that use to be abundant in my sculpture room at Dohto. And this is one of them which I found lying in the room and brought as a souvenir all the way from Japan.

This is a photo of student Chibashin working on two thesis projects in clay, but two Casper-like guardian figures on the wall are Mai Mai's sculptures.

One of the things I look forward to at New Year or in the middle of summer is a greeting card from Mai Sugimoto, one of my former students at Dohto University. Her serious art works are fabrics dyed with natural coloring materials with patterns that are original, but resting and at home with the medium . However, Mai Mai as we call her has another side, where she freely makes light artwork that applies her distinct characters that to me seem like Simpsons gone Casper of the friendly ghost fame. Mai Mai use to make sculptures of these comical figures in my class, but now she sends me original greeting cards with these characters that brightens my living space. Here I'll share few.

2007 Greeting Card

This year's greeting card. A little different in style than previous ones. Is this major change in style or anomaly?

"New Home for Pete" 「

"Pete" with other works by Paul Missal

"Pete" 96"x144" acrylic on canvas

Paul Missal, who is a realistic painter is currently exhibiting his paintings at Blackfish Gallery along with his friends, Nancy Lindburg and William Owen. Among the painting that Paul has exhibited is a huge depiction of horse "Pete". This painting was originally exhibited in Paul's solo exhibition at the original Blackfish gallery space in I believe 1980, thirty years ago. If my memory serves right, this 1980 exhibition was the most popular exhibition of all the early shows at Blackfish in the years I was there: 1979-83. And "Pete" was the center piece. The exhibition had a large write up in Oregonian and consequently drew all kinds of people- perhaps including animal lovers that usually don't come to see a contemporary art. From photos of work in progress which Paul displayed and was also printed in Oregonian article, with this painting, he first painted skeletal structure of Pete, and then covered it with muscles and ligaments before, he completed with skins and hairs. Because of size and beauty of the painting, the work is much more impressive viewing actual than the image shown above. The background of rich, thick coating of Titanium white appears to brings out the subtle brown coloring of the horse and adds to the warmth and nobility of the piece.

For me, the most attractive element in Paul's paintings is a warm, luminous light that is reflected in many of his works. For me this light expresses, warmth, peace, hope and kindness- all things positive. The warm light, I believe, reflects Paul the person as well as he is a very generous man. Paul has offered lots of assistance and advices to me over the years, and judging from what I have heard, to many others as well.

The other major painting in the show " Woman" also displays this warm light.

I am happy to say that " Pete" after thirty years at Paul's studio found a new home, as the painting was bought by Portland Art Museum. So next time when I see "Pete" it will be at the museum, a fitting home for "Pete".

Outdoor installation, "Face Fruits and the Giant Leaf of the Tree of Life"
About 8'x9'

For the next exhibition, I am thinking of presenting a new version of face fruits. It seems every three and half years, I get a desire to make a whole set of face fruit sculptures. Face fruits are one of several sub series themes within my Tree of Life work, but a major one as they are the main product of the Tree. They represent each individual human being, and their ripening symbolizes a human growth. This time I am thinking of combining these face fruits with branches of gingko wood so as to make them look as they are hanging from the branches. As I keep changing in the process, I am not sure how the final product will look, but anyway this is the direction I am thinking and have begin to realize.

In past works, face fruits were made of clay, but this time I am attempting to make them with fiber and glue mixed material that I have used to make recent 'Scene series' pieces. Because of the difference in material quality, and also difference in armature the finish product will probably differ.

For armature instead of rounded styrofoam that was reinforced with cloth, this time as you can see from photos below, I am using various size wires and fencing material. Afterward these were filled with figlue (fiber/glue material0. which I just pen-named for simplicity sake.

Pile of gingko wood with some thread pattern areas. I have originally thought of showing these branches for my last exhibition, but I have saved them for the coming one where I hope to combine these with face fruits.

Jim Gion is a sculptor friend from olden days. In fact I knew him from the time I was studying architecture at Oregon State University. I took my first sculpture class there as an elective class back in 1971. At the time I never thought that sculpture would be my profession in years to come. Jim was a senior then: I believe fresh from Vietnam. He was an outstanding sculpture student there at OSU at the time I was there; sort of like a chief assistant to the professor, and somehow I got to know him. Seven years later, while I was a graduate student getting MFA in sculpture at PSU, we met again. Jim returned from teaching English in Japanese University and decided to take take sculpture class at PSU while resettling in Oregon. He probably just wanted to use the fine bronze facility at the University.

Fortune has it I met Jim again in 2008 just few weeks after I returned from Japan. I found out that he has been making a living as sculptor in Portland. Jim has found niche in modeling sculptures of dogs and other animals, and judging from photos and works in his studio, he must have received hundreds of commission in this genre. Recently, Jim has sculpted lions for Portland Zoo.

Above photos: Jim's commission works for owners of pet dogs

Visiting his studio in N.E section of Portland, I could see that Jim has developed his own techniques of rubber casting and clay modeling. I learned a lot in modeling and casting techniques from watching him. Besides modeling dogs and other animals, he does some abstract works and humorous pieces. However, what I'm most amazed is Jim's realistic figurative works. Jim possesses a natural feel for clay as he makes figures and portraits at an amazing speed. He can create a variety of texture with clay while catching all kinds of expressions. Watching him model clay, I had a feeling some people have a natural talent for this medium and for making a realistic sculpture. At the same time, I found that I don't. Jim says he gets most pleasure from depicting homeless people, and indeed some of his best works are those.

On my last visit, Jim showed me his recent experiment: he has been exploring the possibilities of cast paper. Jim showed me relief works that he has casted into paper praising the lightness that is contrast to his more typical works in bronze. I was interested in this a bit as possibility in my own work, but I have yet to try.

Although sculpture has gone to various directions such as abstract and conceptual, its great that there are artists like Jim Gion who are doing figurative works and works that require lots of craft as these I believe are timeless basics that will live on art trends and fashions.

Yuki's Wedding Book Cover Design 「

I am very happy to say one of my former seminar student, Yuki Sakou (class of 04) got married recently. She designed the cover for her wedding book, and in it she used a photo of my sculpture piece which I have shown in January exhibition at Blackfish gallery. I am pleased to say an angel image of my work appears to be very appropriate with the subject of wedding and works well in her cover design. The cover reminds me of poster Yuki (yuki is snow in Japanese) designed for 2004 Ikeda sculpture seminar exhibition. 2004 group including junior seminar students was an exceptionally talented and energetic group, and many of them appear to take interesting directions after graduation. I hope them further success. And I hope Yuki and her husband a continual happiness.

'Graduates Going Abroad "道都大卒業生たち海外へ」

Yoshida (striped shirt) was an outstanding student in my sculpture class. However, he was a painting major. He recently decided to further his study in painting by attending art school in Paris.

Masa Oohashi here working on a thesis project has gone to New Zealand to fulfil his dream of becoming a special makeup artist.

Yuhi Kazama putting a finishing touch on one of his thesis project piece. Kazama has received a full grant to study art in Germany.

As soon as I learned from a New Year letter that one of the Dohto University graduates has gone to Paris, France for a post graduate study in art, I read in mail that another is hurrying to get aboard a plane to Venice from airport in London and left me at that. Apparently he is going to attend a graduate school in England within week and is taking a tour of Italy before the school opens.

For some reason there seems to be a mini trend to go abroad for study or practice art among some of the students that I have taught at Dohto University in Japan. Not that Japan is culturally dead. There's plenty of art activities in Japan and standard of modern art is very high there. It seems some left because they might have thought their personality and art style fits better oversea and thereby have better chance to flourish. And then there are others who probably have thought they may learn new things from a foreign school and perhaps, a change of scenery may inspire them more. Still others such as Masa Ohashi left for other countries for a purpose that can be attained better in other countries. In his case, Masa left Japan couple years ago for New Zealand to see if he can become a special makeup artist. So far as far as I know, there seems to be one graduate in France, one in Germany, one in Holland, one in New Zealand, and two in England. There's none in US and I won't go over the reason, but I hope in near future there would be few.

Isao Umeda has recently moved to England to attend a graduate school in England. Here he is giving a performance while exhibiting work in Nagano Japan.

Emiri Sasaki has been living and actively making art in England for several years. She recently moved to a town that retains some traditional English scenery. Here she has begun teaching art to kids, and married an Englishman. Above are photos of her most recent home project of repairing a garden wall.
