Together with my artist and fishing friend from olden days, Mario Caoile, I am exhibiting artworks at Blackfish Gallery in Portland, Oregon. My part of exhibition is titled " Face Fruits and Leaves and Branches of the Tree of Life" and is a further development of this theme that I have been working on for years. Face Fruits are the product of my version of the Tree of Life, and it represent you and me and everyone else who have lived, are living and will be living in days to come. With my Tree of Life works, I wish to express uniqueness of each living things and at the same time, unity of the whole universe. Another word, each of you are unique, important part of the universe, and at the same time are all a part of Creation, therefore are all equal. Since the Tree is both the Creator and Creation, being parent to all of us, the Tree is neither for or against anyone, but loves you all.

I have been making Face Fruits for about ten years now. In Japan, I have made them from non-firing clay for modeling, but here I have used a material that is a mixture of fiber and glue. Consequently, these Face Fruits are not as detailed as clay. They also seem fibrous and a bit plump than those of clay. In these recent pieces, I have attached wooden branch. I believe this made these Face Fruits more like fruits than before.

Along with Face Fruits on the wall I have also exhibited an installation piece that represents a harvest time of the Tree of Life. Because various events are scheduled to be held on this gallery space during our exhibition, I have decided to exhibit the ground installation towards back corner of the gallery space. Later after these events are over, I am planning to extend the installation closer to the middle area of the gallery- in the process altering the form and make a different version. I already have altered once so altogether I will probably have three different version of this installation piece.

A squirrel is eating my persimmon 「

After a week of wind, rain and cold weather here in rainy Portland, I finally went outside and look over at my yard to see its condition after all that inclement weather. I was especially looking forward to seeing how my persimmons were doing as it was close to harvest. I worried about the effect of recent weather on my favorite fruit. And to my dismay, most of my persimmons were gone! Looking closer at the tree, I saw movement in the leaves, and found a squirrel eating my large persimmon. So I caught this unexpected culprit in act. It was unexpected because we never had problem with squirrel eating our family persimmon. Crows yes, but whoever heard of squirrel eating persimmons. Now I'm caught in a dilema as I enjoy the presence of squirrels in my yard, but at the same time I look forward to eating persimmons. It would be great if there's enough to share, but unfortunately we haven't had a big harvest the last few years.

Here are photos of squirrel I took last week. I'm sure my Japanese friends and former students would be especially surprise to see this. Good thing is its a good research material for my "Tree of Life" sculpture pieces- always think positively I guess.

Announcement for Face Fruits and Leaves and Branches of the Tree of Life Exhibition 「

I am going to have an exhibition at Blackfish Gallery in December of this year, 2010. This will be my second exhibition since I returned to US. I will share the main gallery space with my dear friend, Mario Caoile. The show will be installation work with some face fruit sculptures on the wall. Above is a PR photo for this coming exhibition that Mario took few weeks ago. The actual exhibition will probably differ a little with much larger scale.

Mario will probably show expressive, colorful, energetic paintings that will be quite a contrast to my work. See Mario's blog for his works. Mario has video of himself at work painting that maybe as interesting as exhibition itself. Here's his blog address

http://mariocaoile.blogspot.com/ Or you may go directly through link listed on the right side of this blog page.

And here's additional information on this exhibition:

Exhibition opens from Nov. 30 to December 31. First Thursday opening is December 2.
The gallery will close at 2:00PM on the last day, New Year's eve.

at Blackfish Gallery

Autumn Scenery of Dohto University Art Studio Building 「

I have just received a photo of Dohto University art studio building in Hokkaido, Japan. It was sent by my Japanese friend, Mr. Yonezawa who just happened to pass by the area with his car. He wanted to show me the beauty of Fall forest with colored leaves of landscape around the school. The photo brought me back memories of beautiful Fall scenery of Hokkaido and of my times in this studio building. My office and sculpture room was on the upper floor, third and fourth window groups from left. The front view of the building has changed since I left. It use to be all brick red color, but now I see areas of white facade.

Working on Leaves of the Tree of Life 「生命の木の葉っぱの制作について」

Thread pattern drawings of Dead Leaf Butterfly and Mandrill (type of old world monkey)

On the back of 16' leaves' that I have been making for the December installation piece, I have decided to draw in representatives of various families of living creatures with thread. Above photo shows couple near completed pieces.

Working process is simple. First I made larger scale sketch of creatures from a reference book onto a paper towel size paper and cut out the form. Finally after making cutouts for all the pieces, I piled onto floor checking to make sure of variety, and to have the form of creatures match the form of each, different leaves. And then I glued on the thread. Generally, two lanes of thread were applied for each contour and for visual effect, I have tried to keep the thread as continuous as possible.

Visiting Chibashin at Furano 「

Visiting Chibashin at Furano

Mai Mai, Kosuge, and Paul, all class of 2005 classmates visited Chibashin and his family at picturesque Furano in central Hokkaido couple months ago. Mai Mai sent me photos of this visit. Chibashin ( Shinji Chiba) as we call them was my sculpture seminar leader in the year 2005, and was an outstanding student. After graduation, Shinji became a teacher teaching at a preparatory school in Furano, his hometown famous for the site of very popular Japanese tv drama series and for scenery.

According to Mai Mai, Chibashin lately quit his teaching job and is taking over his father's farm. That sounds great, and hopefully, perhaps in winter, when he may have some time, Shinji can do some artwork. Chibashin sure made some great stuff as student, and hope he can continue where he left off.

Chibashin's graduate work

Throughout his junior and senior years in my sculpture classes, Chibashin primary made pieces that were abstracted forms of human face. And he made them in non-firing clay. Shinji exaggerated the human facial form so they would be more expressive. As far as I know these were not abstraction of real individuals faces; they were more generative. As his clay and finishing techniques improve, these faces begin to show more depth and monumental presence. Though inadequate in photos, his ambitious thesis projects shown below display these qualities of serenity and monumental presence.

The piece "Meaning to Live Strongly" ( photo below) was technically one of the most difficult student works that I have seen in my class. Though hard to see in photo, the piece consists of perhaps over hundred, small, abstracted facial forms making spiral which in turn forming a pyramidal cone shape that seems to spiral on infinitely. With seemingly no beginning and end to the spiraling chains of faces, it seemed to me this piece also comments on the continuity of mankind. Making the form suspend into the air was techinically very difficult, and I commend Shinji for solving this problem.

The second piece, "Thoughtful Youth is noted for huge, surrealistic looking eye that commands attention from anyone near its presence. De Chirico like shadow also adds to this image. Layers, and layers of textured finishing along with rich, but dark tone color adds depth and profoundness to the piece.

Liquid in Movement-Steve's Kinetic Scupture 「

Steve Soihl's Time Variable Volume Exhibition at Blackfish

Steve Sohil is a friend of mine from graduate student days at Portland State University. He was much more experience in the art field than I at the time; and while student there, he was involved in a project of establishing a new co-op gallery. Early in the spring of 1979, couple months before opening the Blackfish, he invited me to join the gallery for which I am forever grateful.

At the time, Steve was working on a pylon like form that consissted of rich, deep layers of rainbow color polyester resin coating. He later moved on to a liquid kinetic sculpture that involved chambers of colored oil whose volume goes through constant change as liquids flow from one chamber to another. For some reason, this stage didn't last long. As for as I know, for a long time, Steve went on to do water colors and etchings of shrubs, flowers, and weeds. While I enjoy these pieces, when I returned to Portland from Japan, I was happy to see that Steve have return to do kinetic sculptures. And I see that Steve has gone and is continuing to go far beyond where he left off in the 80's. This "Time Variable Volume Exhibition"that was held at Blackfish this June exemplifies this.

In these works, different colored volumes of oils flow from one chamber to another through inclination and gear motor. The artist states that the interest in these works is pure formal. Beauty of geometrical forms, colors of moving oils and resulting lights and shadows through movement in time, and resulting tranquil effect from viewing the work is what Steve seems to be after, and I believe has achieved.

"Time Variable Volume"

With this piece, the volume of oil flows from one chamber to another as motor slowly moves at a five minute interval in circular motion on a tilted platform. The movement of oil from one pyramidal chamber to another is the result of this tilt. Also to note is the shadow effect and wonderful geometrical form of this piece.

Suspended Elements- Tilted Shaft 1

Suspended Elements- Tilted Shaft 2 (detail)

Steve exhibited two kinetic sculptures (above) that were like Calder's mobiles suspended from the ceiling. These however are moved by motor, and are rotated periodically. These tube like forms are connected to shafts up above which are inclined. The inclination makes various oils in each pieces move from one end to another so that color liquids are in constant motion. Support Element #1 even have a solar panel connected to provide electricity.

"Rotating Pyramidal Forms"

In this installation work which is my favorite of all Steve's work, three separate sculptural pieces are set on a wall with gear motors set on the other side so the pieces move around. There is another device that provides a beam of light which hits the moving pyramidal and tubular forms.
The result is a constant moving variable shape lights and shadows that appears and disappears on the side and end walls. And the effect is very meditative.Besides enjoying the movement of lights and shadows, one can derive aesthetic pleasure from the form and movement of these sculptural pieces. Because time element is vital in understanding and appreciating Steve's work, and especially this one, I recommend highly for you to see the u-tube that is installed in Blackfish blog page. Here's the address:

http://blackfishgallery.blogspot.com/

Or you may just push Blackfish on my bloglist shown on the right side. Iit's a superb exhibition.

Early Works: Cross Section Series 「

Cross section series are works I have made between1984 and 1985. This was a period after I resigned from Blackfish gallery in March, 1983. These I exhibited at newly, opened Littman gallery at Portland State University.

My major reason for quitting Blackfish was I was under stress from help taking care of my father who had stroke in December and also taking care of his business. It was though a good time for me to move onto other things as well since I was still relatively young and inexperience and need to try other art activities. These I did after after I settled down.

One of the thing I did was join the Northwest Workshop, an alternate gallery that specialized in exhibiting then avant- garde type art such as installation and performance arts. Another thing I did was I took a term of class in woodworking at Oregon Arts and Crafts where I learned to make dovetail joints.

Also I was entering a reflective period of my life. I found myself reading books by Jung, Joseph Campbell and others who dealt with dreams, symbols, psychology and myth interpretation as well as on eastern philosophies and comparative religion. Result is these cross section works in which I combined the previous Wall and Floor series pieces to create a metaphysical 'room' that exist deep within my mind.

When making these works, I have pictured my inner mind as an infinite architectural structure with walls and floors. Each particular subject that was occupying my thoughts became a major structure, a sculptural edifice, that was built in such a way that symbolized the trains of my thoughts. These works were done intuitively, and it is toward the final stage of completion that I became somewhat aware of what I was making. However, it is much later, especially during and after the exhibition that I became aware of various symbols that I subconsciously incorporated into these works. This was for me a time of transformation from youth to adult: I was really interested in discovering who I am and had desire to interpret the reality in my own ways, which is through sculpture.

Photo of these works are very poor. They were originally in slide form, but were then developed into photos and later scanned. These are definitely works that I can say the real works are far better than photos. I really had a great time making this group of work and these were very well received.

This was one of the most ambitious of early works and also one of my favorite; it received very good response from a knowledgeable audience. Unfortunately the photo is very poor, and I'm sorry to say its difficult to get a feel of this piece from this photo. The work combined the elements of Wall pieces and Floor pieces except this one is naturally finished. I initially had plan to make a huge installation piece that contains a room full of these walls and floors. Like a Big Bang Atom, for me this Wall contains all that is me. At the same time it is the Wall that records all that is me.

At the time of making I wasn't sure what I have created. Currently I see this as earth-
a place of refugee, a place of rebirth and a place to metamorphose. I or rather my 'soul' is here in this earth hopefully to undergo growth and metamorphosis. This is a theme I am planning to explore more with "the Tree of Life" works. Intuitively I must have felt this as I worked on this piece. Various copies of photos of myself at different period of my life probably indicates both the process of growth and stages of my life. This is a theme I am planing to explore more with " The Tree of Life" works so I will leave explanation of this piece at this.

Relatively large wooden piece on the back is a geometrical Sphinx and the rows of stepping columns making up and down ' movement' is Shiva dancing. Sphinx lies still in desert questioning people and Shiva, the Hindu god is dancing the dance of life and death. I thought to have a balance, meaningful life, I needed to be both Sphinx and Shiva that is I need to enjoy life as in Shiva as well as have a reflective side which for me is Sphinx."

It maybe hard to see from these photos, but there are hundred of puzzle like plywood pieces with various photo cut outs from National Geography magazine glued on. It is as though the structure is going through disintegration and each fragments are puzzle pieces. The work I think is saying that so called ' Truth' is disintegrated to various individual pieces and the answer lies in putting them back together. For me then each pieces, each individual is important part that together becomes a whole. The answer lies in all of us.

"Way Station: Where Paths Meet and Directions, Infinite"

Mix media with plywood, cloth, cord, pebbles, and sand;

For me, Way Station is myself of the moment; the bench, thoughts at rest; and lines of rail, threads and variously angled white sheeted forms, all the events and lives of people that are connected to me at this point of time. To which direction I set depends on what rail I choose perhaps, but it also depends on type of rails and lines that comes and meets me. o I am g.iven the choice to navigate my life, my fate, but the fate is not of my making.

Work in Progress: Face Fruits 2 「

Group of uncompleted Face fruits on the shelf. At this stage foundation for individual faces are being made.

I have started to work on Face Fruits again. These are works that I have begun to make since about ten years ago, and I must have made over 150 pieces of these by now. All these pieces were made in clay mixed with other materials, but this time, I am making them out of fiber. I have started making this new group of Face Fruits since January, a day after I installed my last show at Blackfish. In my earlier post, I have shown how I developed armature in wire and mesh cloth. By April, I have filled these 74 Face Fruits in armature stage with a mixture of fiber and glue which I will call 'figlue' for short. Once these are filled, I pasted sheets of 80%cotton fiber over faces to provide firm skin and muscle structure. By this stage, individual features have begun to show.

Wire and meshed cloth armatures have been all filed with 'figlue', and these batch of face fruits with fiber glue material are now being dried.

Sheets of fiber cloth are being cut and pasted on the fiber glue material to form a

These are now ready to move onto individualizing stage of the face fruit creation process.

Cherry blossoms of Pentagonal Fortress in Hakodate「

Photos of cherry blossoms and pentagon fortress of Hakodate

Mr. Yonezawa who took a photo of Takizakura cherry blossom that I have posted earlier sent me photos of cherry blossom that he took when he visited the city of Hakodate a year ago. These cherry blossoms are planted around a historical site, Gojyokaku (pentagonal) fortress. This is five sided fortress that is famous in Japan as the site of last stand by Bakufu government samurais in a civil war that ended the 300 year Tokugawa government and of samurai era of Japanese history.

The star shaped fortress is built in western style that was designed for more modern warfare of guns and cannons. I have visited this site around fifteen years ago when I visited the city for the convention of college art teachers association of Japan. It was fall then so equally famous red pine trees of this fortress was more noticeable. Red pines seem to symbolize all the lives shed in this fortress. And cherry blossoms that blossom in May seem to symbolize rebirth. The beauty of cherry blossoms and idyllic scenery seem to bring forth feeling of peace and sooth those souls
that fought bravery in years past.

My Last Seminar Student, Noriko "Mori mori"Mori'sThesis Exhibition 「

One of the rooms in Sapporo Civic Gallery where Dohto University Thesis Exhibition 2010 was exhibited. Because of decline of student population (throughout Japan) the exhibition appears sparse compare to thesis exhibitions of five to ten years ago.

Morimori's thesis work. Rows of clay faces inside a lighted, contained space made of plywood. (photo by Maimai).

Noriko Mori held her thesis exhibition along with other Dohto University art students at Sapporo Civic Gallery in February. Morimori as her friends and myself call her is special to me in that she 's probably the last student at Dohto University in Japan that I can say I had real input into her artistic development. There were others in this 2010 class that I taught as sophomore students in my last year at Dohto, but I taught them in regular class session whereas Morimori came by after hours as unofficial seminar student (only juniors and seniors are allowed in seminar). With graduation of Mori mori and others of this class, much of my remaining tie with this university in northern Japan ends.

I could not get hold of Morimori to get more information on her work, so I will make comment of it through previous knowledge. Morimori was working on the theme of "World of Gandhara". Gandhara as you may know was civilization in ancient India ( present Afghanistan and Pakistan border area-really a hot bed of Taliban activity!) that flourished over 1,500 years ago. To Morimori though its a mythical world of her imagination. She was interested in developing architectural feature as well as people of this world and this particular piece with rows of strange faces in a contained space seem to reflect both. Hope she continues to develop this world.
