Kazama's Exhibition at Saito Gallery「

Kazama standing on right, with members of class of 05' Dohto University Faculty of Arts 〈(上、道都大学美術学部の2005年の卒業生たちと)

Above two photos are exhibition of print works at Saito Gallery. Below shows Kazama modeling a leaping frog fro thesis exhibition.( 上、斉藤ギャラリーでの個展と下は卒業制作の作業姿)

Formerly, a member of my sculpture seminar, Kazama made number of memorable animal pieces in clay when he was undergraduate student such as this frog piece on the left t hat he modeled for a thesis exhibition. Upon graduation, Kazama has concentrated on silkscreen and lithograph printing, first with Dohto University's Nakajima silk screen seminar, and later as MFA student at university in Tokyo. Kazama has received major awards in printing and if what I have heard is correct, lately has received an invitation to study abroad in Germany for a year with full financial award to go with it.

Kazama will be leaving for Germany in Fall, but prior to going, he held an exhibition at Saito Gallery at a room next to Mai Mai and Mikami exhibition which I reported earlier in this blog.
The photos I receive on this exhibition does not provide a detail view of prints, but from what I know of his talent, and from what I have seen of his earlier prints, I am sure they exhibit dynamic composition, excellent color sense, and a superb draughtsmanship for in terms of traditional artistic skills, Kazama was easily one of the best I've seen at Dohto.

Mario's Recent Sculptures 「

" You're Wonderful"「

These are recent painted sculptures of Mario that I have seen at his shows in Blackfish Gallery.
With his permission I am showing them here. Though painted recently, many of these works appeared to be pieces that were welded together in steel in much earlier date, some as old as twenty years. If you check Mario's blog, which I have listed on the left side of this blog, you will see him on You Tube. You will see how he painted these sculpture forms and transformed into what you see here. Its exciting, and interesting to watch, and I recommend highly for my former Japanese students many of whom may be more use to preplanned or carefully crafted paintings and sculptures. Mario appears to paint spontaneously, just playing with paint and enjoying what comes. Perhaps Mario has certain image in his head prior to painting the work, but seeing him paint, it doesn't seem to show this. Result to me is a work of exciting blend of color and three dimensional form.

" My Awesome Niece" and " Internet" pieces shown above are for me just beautiful three dimensional forms that were made more interesting and 'alive' with paint on it. With some imagination , one could sense a face in them. To me " Internet" looks more like a neo African mask or Mario's version of 'Green Goblin' mask of Spiderman fame, but with these it maybe up to viewers what they see.

'You're wonderful" is one of my favorite piece of Mario. It has a mirror in the center so you can look at yourself and feel better with all the sparkling painting whirling all around it. The first time I saw this piece was when Mario had it displayed in the backroom of the gallery, and as I was telling Mario some negative feelings, he pointed this work few feet away. Panacea! Chuckling, I immediately felt a whole lot better.

"the Internet" painted, welded steel 「ザ・インタネット」

"My Awesome Niece" 「

(Japanese version of Sugimoto /Mikami Exhibition)

Exhibition of Dyed Fabrics by Mai 'Mai Mai" Sugimoto and Izumi 'Izumon'Mikami

Above: Fabrics and soft sculpture pieces by Mai Mai (large) and Izumon's character by her mother (small). On the table are comic books by Izumi (Izumon) Mikami

Above: Mikami's dark fabric works

Left: Detail of Mai Mai's silk screenwork

Mai Mai Sugimoto and Izumi Mikami held exhibition consisting mainly of dyed fabrics at Saito Gallery in the center of downtown Sapporo. Mai Mai was a student of mine (class of 05') and made some wonderful characters in clay, but moved on to dye works. She especially has a special affinity for natural vegetative dyes, and much of her pattern fabric works are done in this medium. More colorful works in which her characters appear are done through silk screen print. In this exhibition, she has also included a soft sculpture piece of one of her character that she made of strips of old dyed fabrics.

Mikami also graduated from Dohto University (class of 97') , and if I am not wrong is currently a guest lecturer there teaching woodcut prints and fabric dyeing. Mikami works with a variety of art medium, but is also noted for wonderful characters that appears in story illustrations, comic books, paintings and soft sculptures as well as wood cuts and fabric works. This exhibition appears to be most sombre of her works as she apparently wanted to explore variation of one pattern on bear. Unfortunately I do not have a detail photo here, but if you ever look closerly here, you will see all kinds of interesting figures and patterns within the major pattern that is seen in the photo above.

Unlike most of their other exhibitions, this one is almost all fabrics... 13 each. Besides the merit of each work, walls of fabrics in color and in black and white must have been imposing and fascinating in themselves.

Other than fabrics and soft sculptures are copies of comic book series by Mikami, "Warabimo" that describes a really funny sadistic/masochistic relationship of cute characer warabimo and his young lady owner. It's a great home made comic book and I have all the volumes that were published up to last year and brought them to US.

Though not too apparent in this exhibit, when it comes to developing a really unique, original characters both Mai Mai and Izumon Mikami are among the most talented I've seen.

"Third Exhibition at Blackfish- The Walls" 「

I will end posts on my early Blackfish exhibition with this one. The third one was on my second groups of "Wall Series" whose photos I have shown in earlier post that discussed my early shows at Blackfish. I will just leave a small photo image here as this is repeat. It was held at the early part of 1983 just before I left Blackfish as I was planning to move onto other things. These were shown on a new space that Blackfish lately bought. A narrow space next to Blackfish was opened for rent so members took over and refinished it. This extended the space to the point that space wise, Blackfish possessed one of the the three largest commercial gallery space in the Northwest. So Irene Senners, a superb artist, took over the main gallery, and I the side gallery, and we both I believe were well received by artists and critical viewers.

Unlike earlier pieces, these Wall pieces were fairly uniform in terms of size, shape, and materials used. And also different from earlier pieces, there was definite difference between front and back side of walls. The front area was much more paintly while the back was more uniform with near single tone coloring. Unlike earlier works also was that instead of reflecting the human presence through weathered walls of surrounding walls of old buildings, these I felt were more like painted monoliths with more of stonehenge like presence as though they abstractedly recorded the passing of eons of time or like something to the effect of monoliths that appeared on that great movie, 2001 Space Odyssey. Come to think of it, the author Arthur C. Clarke was one of my favorite SF author. In fact I have listened to his lecture at Gill Coliseum in Oregon State University back in 1970.

"The Floor Series"

Work to the left, "Floor #1", stain over emulsion paint on lumber. shown at the Blackfish backroom 10"x22"x96" , 1981 「材木の上に緑と黒のエムルションペンキとスタインを塗ってある。

Work right above, "Floor #3", 4"'x42"x12o" (not exhibited)「長さ、やく三メートル20センチ」

Work second from top, "Floor #6", 7"x46x 192" including spread of pebbles 「

Work at the very top, "Floor #2", 14"x48"x72" (exhibited at Blackfish back room) 「幅やく1メートル30センチと長さ、やく1メートル80センチ」

Floor Series are works I made between 1981 to 1982, but were not shown together as a group in exhibition. Couple of these pieces, I have brought in and exhibited at the back room of Blackfish. Another, the largest standing piece, " The Floor #9" , a 7 feet wide and 28 feet long piece, was shown in Artquake 83' exhibition. There was another, a full scale installation piece that had numerous painted square blocks and pebbles that spread all over the room that was shown at the second floor of Bush Barn Gallery in Salem. However, most others were not shown outside of studio as I quit Blackfish and moved on to other things. These works were derived from the Wall #7 as I mentioned in earlier post, but it may also have been influenced by then fellow Blackfish sculptor, Michi Kosuge who was making some impressive horizontal floor pieces in steel. Here I will display three pieces that I have scanned in Japan from photos.

Backroom of Blackfish

Backroom of Blackfish Gallery is a sale section where members will have their works stored for sale. At the same time there are usually room for a place to display several of these works for people to see. In the first Blackfish gallery at the sixth avenue in Flanders street, there was ample space to have a monthly mini show of Blackfish members. Back in early 80's when I was a young member, I would almost monthly would bring a new work for display. Wall #7 is one of these and is one of my key work as the horizontal extension led me to "floor series". The sculpture is mostly made of glued 4"x4"s. However, in between layers of lattice work are strips of stained cloth which although dark are more purple than looks on the photo print. Result I feel is a weighty but meditative piece that is one of my favorite of Early period works. Piece is 61"x26"x88" and was made in 1981.

(Introducing artist, Robert Dozono, Japanese version)

Introducing artist,,Robert Dozono

Above and Below, "Good Earth, Orignal-Kiss My Face Clackamas#13"

(unfinished above and finished state below)

Robert Dozono is an Eco-Green artist that is he deals with environmental issues in his work. For a long time, Dozono has painted local landscapes on panels pasted with his own recycled garbages. Apparently its his comment on a need to recycle used man made objects to both retain and maintain a beauty of nature. At the same time, for me, these works are beautiful, masterfully painted landscapes with subtle colorings of warm and cool colors and variety of textures created by various shapes of disposed objects. Irregular shape of many of these paintings at times created by combining panels and an angle of pictorial view, I think, help the viewer to enter them as if though a viewer is seeing the flowing river and green forest from standing on currents of water or an invisible rock in the midst of widening river.

Robert is a friend of mine from olden days. I got to know him when we worked on Asian Artist of Oregon exhibition back in early 80's. Back then he was a fine painter of mostly figures and landscapes. Robert began his disposal pieces after I left for Japan so I did not see the very beginning of these works. However, each time I visit Dozono's studio, his disposal paintings seems to gain in depth and presence. Image photos in this page, I don't think, do justice, because photos miss both the subtleties and clarity of the actual work. Clarity is missed because from my experience a person needs to be several feet away from these works to see clearly the realism in them. Also due to various shapes of disposals sticking out from the paint panel, these are more three dimensional than most paintings so that much of physical aspect of the painting is missed in the photos. T

These are powerful group of paintings that were slowly developed over a substantial period of time, and I sure would love to see a major retrospective exhibition of them. (photo images permission granted by the artist).

Japanese version of second Blackfish Gallery Exhibition

TheTrain, The Walls and Traps- the Second Blackfish Exhibition, part II

In addition, I have made five"trap pieces” for this exhibition. These were unlike any of the other pieces in this exhibition in that they were spatial works instead of solid forms with an intricate surface treatment as " the Wall" or ''the Train" pieces. And above all, unlike construction materials used in other works, these were made of branches of a tree, fish net and pebbles- materials close to nature. The experience of born in fishing port in Japan, camping as a member of boyscout in Oregon, interest in a primitive culture, and having a room mate at Oregon State University dorm who was making allowance money trapping and selling muskrat all these probably had something to do with formation of these pieces. There were criticisms that having these "Trap Series" works with "the Walls" and "the Train" in a one show was inconsistent. At the time of the exhibition I wasn't sure about this. Being young and inexperience, I just made what came to me. Reflecting back, "the Traps" simultaneous appearance with "the Walls" and "the Train" does not seem that contradictory in that this reflected dichotomous childhood existence within me: of my experience of living in the midst of city vs. summer country life of living in cabin picking berries and going out for boyscout camping. But more than this, already in this exhibition, signs of my need to show world of mankind simultaneously with world of nature as in my life's work "the Tree of Life " is shown. The "Trap Series" gained much more significance as usage of branches and coils of thread as in these works becomea major elements in my current works.

TheTrain, The Walls and Traps- the Second Blackfish Exhibition, part I

The second exhibition I had at Blackfish was one person exhibition, and it was the biggest exhibition I had there. The show was continuation of exploration into artifacts of mankind except instead of making sculptures that refer to some ancient cultures, this one contained forms that are derived more from a personal experience. The "wall' pieces probably derived subconsciously from my experience of sanding, painting and staining walls and woodwork of old hotel in the Old Town part of the city where I was raised. In fact the staining and varnishing technique that I use considerably in my work derived from my childhood where I helped out refinishing old furniture. Also living in the edge of Old Town and in the old Pearl district area of city of Portland with warehouses, factories and railroad yards of weathered brick buildings with worn out paints of advertisements on exterior and box carts probably deeply imprinted me. This background then also resulted in the installation piece of this exhibit, "the Train" which may well have been the single, largest work presented in this first Blackfish space. Although wall pieces I thought had some of the most favorable reaction I ever received from the audience, its "the Train" piece people seem to remember the most as I still hear people talking about it even to this day. Stenciling technique I used in the sculptures, I used it also on print/painting in which "BC" is one example. I used exterior latex paint for cement floor which gave an effect similar to worn out paint on exterior walls of old building.
