Horses and Myths: Works of Steve Tilden Part I 「神話と馬ースティブ テイルドン氏の作品 第一」

"Io and Prometheus" by Steve Tilden 「

Steve Tilden whose studio I discussed in a previous post seems to work with several themes in various media. Of these, I would like to introduce works that deal with the theme of horse, especially those with reference to myth.

Steve appears to know horses very well as he to me depicts the movements and feelings of horse gestures in most simplest forms. "Galvin's Horse" image on the left for instance catches the mood and gesture of a dying horse in expressively elongated, but simplified sheet metal form.

I have seen other works in his place that are more abstract and deals with the expressive form of horse only. For the most part though, Steve seems to like story behind his horse works.

Talk about story, Steve to me is a Blackfish version of Homer or Sheherazade, a marvelous teller of story who with background as varied as being sailor, contractor, PhD recipient in education as well as being an artist, possesses in his head, equally bottomless trove of interesting and humorous stories. I found myself deeply immersed listening to Steve's stories each time I visit his studio.

Though Steve has lots of stories to tell from his varied life's experience, myths, especially Greek myth appears to be his favorite subject. His painting, "Io and Prometheus" (above) displays this interest towards Greek myths. Innocent maiden, Io forcefully transformed by Zeus into a wandering bovine pest by gadfly, and humane titan, Prometheus chained to rock by Zeus for teaching mankind usage of fire shows to me capriciousness and injustice of Greek divinities, but perhaps point out a whim of human fate. At the end, Zeus finally transforms back Io into a woman and for giving hope and kindness perhaps, a descendant of Io, Hercules unchains Prometheus.

These ironies, capriciousness of human fate, secular nature of Greek divinities, humanity, symbolism and vivid imagery and being just darn good entertainment are perhaps some of the reasons that attract Steve to illustrate these Greek myths in his works.

In Steve's painting Io's face appears together with that of ox for Prometheus can see Io within the feminine bovine figure. Varied expressions such as consideration, plead, and love on
Prometheus's face is convincingly painted and the fire that he holds amidst a dramatically painted red and black background appears to me to be the light of hope. And Hope is what he gives to Io.

Here, I meant to write about Steve's horse works, and I found myself getting side track with Io. Though not as much as Steve, I also find fascination with myths and fables. I'll fix this by writing this post in two parts, with the second on Trojan horse..

Welding at Steve Tilden's Studio/House 「

This post discusses on Steve Tilden's house/studio, and on my welding work there.

                Studio space

Steve Tilden is a new friend whom I met when I joined Blackfish co-op gallery in Portland, this June. He is a current co-president of Blackfish. Blackfish annually holds 'Retreat' which is a meeting held outside of gallery to discuss major issues
concerning gallery and plans for future. This year it was held at Steve's home, and it was chance for me to see his wonderful home/studio in northeast Portland. Upon complimenting his studio/ house, Steve generously offered me an opportunity to use his facility and learn welding. Although I've done little gas welding at Benson Polytechnic Highschool and at PSU, the experience was insubstantial, and it was bad (laugh). Guy next to me was so careless, that one time he leaked oxygen gas that ended with a huge bang just a foot away from my work area. Another time thanks to him, a whole two cubic foot of air in front of me turned into flame! He leaked the acetylene gas! Later at PSU, while working on welded sculpture, I tried to hammer the sheet metal into a form after welding on anvil. However, all the banging of hammer irritated people at registration office down below the sculpture room. So much for welding. But this time at Steve's I find myself enjoying the process. It'll take a while to master the process, but with Steve's guidance I think this time I think I'll make something of it.

Here, I am showing photos of the Steve's studio/house, especially for my former students in Japan who probably are not use to seeing such a creative freedom found in designing and building Steve's place. Details such as a gate door made of old car door, a free flowing, serpentine gutter and labyrinthine garden, a locker dish cabinets as well as just sheer size of the studio I'm sure would fascinate Japanese audience. Because of it, I will write more on this aspect in Japanese version of this post.

New Wave in Yubari-Part 2 Students 「ニューウェブーin夕張展その2卒業生たちの作品

a photo of "New Wave in Yubari Exhibition"「夕張展会場」

"Living" a photo by M. Atsumo 「

Below bottom "Camouflage" by Ikkun, center illustrations by Attan including "Yubari Melon", and sales corner with original cards, bags, badges and 'coal flutes on top.

Led by Attan who also made the site for this exhibition, five former students of class of 06 and 07 joined former professor and a guest lecturer of Dohto University in this exhibition at the citizen's gallery at Yubari Art Museum. They appeared to be the members who worked together for campus festivals and other school activities together in those mid 2000 school years. The curator of Yubari museum Mr. Kudo is also a member of this group, and I assume he invited them all for the show. Though members vary in majors from ceramics to sculpture to computer graphics, most of them worked as designers after they graduated from school and works in this exhibition reflect this. Ikude or Ikkun as we called him, for instance was my sculpture seminar student and after graduation he worked as a designer for cardboard manufacturing company. In this exhibition he has made a green and yellow frog out of cardboard. Its a clever piece because to me it shows reference to his major, sculpture and reference to his work, cardboard designer, and to the city of yubari with green and yellow color of city's famous product, Yubari melon.

Akiko Suami or Attan as we call her also has works that reflect her occupation as designer in Tokyo and her support for the city of Yubari which as I mentioned in Part I is going through hard times with reference again to the city's products.

Other notable works include photos of flowers and can by Mayumi Atsumo and graphic works by Maki Wada and Yoshida. Most of these works appeared not to make serious artistic statement, but were created with lots of fun. The exhibition was an occassion for participants to set aside their works and get together with old school friends and teachers, and works of students reflect this. Hopefully, this will stimulate students to further creative works.

Professor Noriichi Kosugi who recently retired from teaching a production design and ceramicist, Tomoyuki Nakajima along with students who graduated from Dohto University few years ago gathered together to exhibit their recent works at citizen's gallery of Yubari Art Museum.

Besides a forum to exhibit their recent works, the exhibition appears to be an opportunity for those involve to celebrate professor Kosugi's retirement and get together again. Judging by works and comments on paper, it also appears to be a way for those involved to support the city of Yubari which is going through financially difficult times.

Besides teaching production and interior designs, Professor Kosugi is one of the foremost lacquer artist in Hokkaido. I have seen his lacquer ware works in the past in Sapporo. These were works on "Floating Ice" series that depicted abstractly in lacquer the floating ice of Ohotsk Sea that in late winter, visits Monmbetsu city where Dohto University use to have campus a decade ago. I have seen a floating ice so I was amazed that professor Kosugi was able to capture the feeling of floating ice geometrically in such a media. Pieces in this exhibition appears to be new works that has combine floral and nude figure themes. I cannot make comment on these as I have not seen them except in photos, but I am pleased to see the professor abosorb himself in creativity after his retirement.

Both Nakajima and Kosugi appears to have fondness for traditional esthetic of Japan as the forms and colors of their works showcase this. Nakajima's works that I have seen and is displayed in the exhibit are usually functional ware and have simple forms and 'shibui' or rustic color that seems to be at home with tea ceremony and old wooden houses of Japan. " Coal Flutes " is one nonfunctional artwork of Nakajima that pleasantly surprised me. It has reference to Yubari's coal mining past. But like professor Kosugi's lanterns though original, these seem to possess the form and feeling reminiscent of Japanese traditional art and craft. One can say their works are modernized and personalized version of old tradition and perhaps because of this, probably appeal to many.

Note: City of Yubari is one of those former coal towns you find not only in Japan, but elsewhere including US which flourished when coal was a major fuel source, but rapidly declined with cease of coal production. It had some success recovering through producing famous Yubari , melons, but its other recovery project, an ambitious theme park has gone awry, resulting city in a financial red.

Branches of Gingko Tree 「

Above is branches of gingko tree after the cut and on the deck.

Above is branches of gingko tree with barks peeled off. Below is a ginkgo tree in my yard after the cut.

I have cut lots of branches off the Ginkgo tree in my yard last summer and found that they possessed the quality I wanted in my "Tree of Life "work. The bark of peeled off easily and smoothly, and once they dried, they hardened. The tree was planted by my father back in 1980 when he bought it from a Japanese landscaper who also owned a small nursery. I found that it has grown to a considerable heigth while I was away in Japan.

So this March, as the tree needed cutting to avoid the electric lines, I cut some more. Actually a lot more, and spent the next month and half peeling the branches out on my deck. You can see a huge pile of branches on my deck. Later, I did some more work on them at the basement in my deck. However, with these I think I will leave as natural as possible for a while

Kazama's Exhibition at Saito Gallery「

Kazama standing on right, with members of class of 05' Dohto University Faculty of Arts 〈(上、道都大学美術学部の2005年の卒業生たちと)

Above two photos are exhibition of print works at Saito Gallery. Below shows Kazama modeling a leaping frog fro thesis exhibition.( 上、斉藤ギャラリーでの個展と下は卒業制作の作業姿)

Formerly, a member of my sculpture seminar, Kazama made number of memorable animal pieces in clay when he was undergraduate student such as this frog piece on the left t hat he modeled for a thesis exhibition. Upon graduation, Kazama has concentrated on silkscreen and lithograph printing, first with Dohto University's Nakajima silk screen seminar, and later as MFA student at university in Tokyo. Kazama has received major awards in printing and if what I have heard is correct, lately has received an invitation to study abroad in Germany for a year with full financial award to go with it.

Kazama will be leaving for Germany in Fall, but prior to going, he held an exhibition at Saito Gallery at a room next to Mai Mai and Mikami exhibition which I reported earlier in this blog.
The photos I receive on this exhibition does not provide a detail view of prints, but from what I know of his talent, and from what I have seen of his earlier prints, I am sure they exhibit dynamic composition, excellent color sense, and a superb draughtsmanship for in terms of traditional artistic skills, Kazama was easily one of the best I've seen at Dohto.

Mario's Recent Sculptures 「

" You're Wonderful"「

These are recent painted sculptures of Mario that I have seen at his shows in Blackfish Gallery.
With his permission I am showing them here. Though painted recently, many of these works appeared to be pieces that were welded together in steel in much earlier date, some as old as twenty years. If you check Mario's blog, which I have listed on the left side of this blog, you will see him on You Tube. You will see how he painted these sculpture forms and transformed into what you see here. Its exciting, and interesting to watch, and I recommend highly for my former Japanese students many of whom may be more use to preplanned or carefully crafted paintings and sculptures. Mario appears to paint spontaneously, just playing with paint and enjoying what comes. Perhaps Mario has certain image in his head prior to painting the work, but seeing him paint, it doesn't seem to show this. Result to me is a work of exciting blend of color and three dimensional form.

" My Awesome Niece" and " Internet" pieces shown above are for me just beautiful three dimensional forms that were made more interesting and 'alive' with paint on it. With some imagination , one could sense a face in them. To me " Internet" looks more like a neo African mask or Mario's version of 'Green Goblin' mask of Spiderman fame, but with these it maybe up to viewers what they see.

'You're wonderful" is one of my favorite piece of Mario. It has a mirror in the center so you can look at yourself and feel better with all the sparkling painting whirling all around it. The first time I saw this piece was when Mario had it displayed in the backroom of the gallery, and as I was telling Mario some negative feelings, he pointed this work few feet away. Panacea! Chuckling, I immediately felt a whole lot better.

"the Internet" painted, welded steel 「ザ・インタネット」

"My Awesome Niece" 「

(Japanese version of Sugimoto /Mikami Exhibition)

Exhibition of Dyed Fabrics by Mai 'Mai Mai" Sugimoto and Izumi 'Izumon'Mikami

Above: Fabrics and soft sculpture pieces by Mai Mai (large) and Izumon's character by her mother (small). On the table are comic books by Izumi (Izumon) Mikami

Above: Mikami's dark fabric works

Left: Detail of Mai Mai's silk screenwork

Mai Mai Sugimoto and Izumi Mikami held exhibition consisting mainly of dyed fabrics at Saito Gallery in the center of downtown Sapporo. Mai Mai was a student of mine (class of 05') and made some wonderful characters in clay, but moved on to dye works. She especially has a special affinity for natural vegetative dyes, and much of her pattern fabric works are done in this medium. More colorful works in which her characters appear are done through silk screen print. In this exhibition, she has also included a soft sculpture piece of one of her character that she made of strips of old dyed fabrics.

Mikami also graduated from Dohto University (class of 97') , and if I am not wrong is currently a guest lecturer there teaching woodcut prints and fabric dyeing. Mikami works with a variety of art medium, but is also noted for wonderful characters that appears in story illustrations, comic books, paintings and soft sculptures as well as wood cuts and fabric works. This exhibition appears to be most sombre of her works as she apparently wanted to explore variation of one pattern on bear. Unfortunately I do not have a detail photo here, but if you ever look closerly here, you will see all kinds of interesting figures and patterns within the major pattern that is seen in the photo above.

Unlike most of their other exhibitions, this one is almost all fabrics... 13 each. Besides the merit of each work, walls of fabrics in color and in black and white must have been imposing and fascinating in themselves.

Other than fabrics and soft sculptures are copies of comic book series by Mikami, "Warabimo" that describes a really funny sadistic/masochistic relationship of cute characer warabimo and his young lady owner. It's a great home made comic book and I have all the volumes that were published up to last year and brought them to US.

Though not too apparent in this exhibit, when it comes to developing a really unique, original characters both Mai Mai and Izumon Mikami are among the most talented I've seen.

"Third Exhibition at Blackfish- The Walls" 「

I will end posts on my early Blackfish exhibition with this one. The third one was on my second groups of "Wall Series" whose photos I have shown in earlier post that discussed my early shows at Blackfish. I will just leave a small photo image here as this is repeat. It was held at the early part of 1983 just before I left Blackfish as I was planning to move onto other things. These were shown on a new space that Blackfish lately bought. A narrow space next to Blackfish was opened for rent so members took over and refinished it. This extended the space to the point that space wise, Blackfish possessed one of the the three largest commercial gallery space in the Northwest. So Irene Senners, a superb artist, took over the main gallery, and I the side gallery, and we both I believe were well received by artists and critical viewers.

Unlike earlier pieces, these Wall pieces were fairly uniform in terms of size, shape, and materials used. And also different from earlier pieces, there was definite difference between front and back side of walls. The front area was much more paintly while the back was more uniform with near single tone coloring. Unlike earlier works also was that instead of reflecting the human presence through weathered walls of surrounding walls of old buildings, these I felt were more like painted monoliths with more of stonehenge like presence as though they abstractedly recorded the passing of eons of time or like something to the effect of monoliths that appeared on that great movie, 2001 Space Odyssey. Come to think of it, the author Arthur C. Clarke was one of my favorite SF author. In fact I have listened to his lecture at Gill Coliseum in Oregon State University back in 1970.

"The Floor Series"

Work to the left, "Floor #1", stain over emulsion paint on lumber. shown at the Blackfish backroom 10"x22"x96" , 1981 「材木の上に緑と黒のエムルションペンキとスタインを塗ってある。

Work right above, "Floor #3", 4"'x42"x12o" (not exhibited)「長さ、やく三メートル20センチ」

Work second from top, "Floor #6", 7"x46x 192" including spread of pebbles 「

Work at the very top, "Floor #2", 14"x48"x72" (exhibited at Blackfish back room) 「幅やく1メートル30センチと長さ、やく1メートル80センチ」

Floor Series are works I made between 1981 to 1982, but were not shown together as a group in exhibition. Couple of these pieces, I have brought in and exhibited at the back room of Blackfish. Another, the largest standing piece, " The Floor #9" , a 7 feet wide and 28 feet long piece, was shown in Artquake 83' exhibition. There was another, a full scale installation piece that had numerous painted square blocks and pebbles that spread all over the room that was shown at the second floor of Bush Barn Gallery in Salem. However, most others were not shown outside of studio as I quit Blackfish and moved on to other things. These works were derived from the Wall #7 as I mentioned in earlier post, but it may also have been influenced by then fellow Blackfish sculptor, Michi Kosuge who was making some impressive horizontal floor pieces in steel. Here I will display three pieces that I have scanned in Japan from photos.

Backroom of Blackfish

Backroom of Blackfish Gallery is a sale section where members will have their works stored for sale. At the same time there are usually room for a place to display several of these works for people to see. In the first Blackfish gallery at the sixth avenue in Flanders street, there was ample space to have a monthly mini show of Blackfish members. Back in early 80's when I was a young member, I would almost monthly would bring a new work for display. Wall #7 is one of these and is one of my key work as the horizontal extension led me to "floor series". The sculpture is mostly made of glued 4"x4"s. However, in between layers of lattice work are strips of stained cloth which although dark are more purple than looks on the photo print. Result I feel is a weighty but meditative piece that is one of my favorite of Early period works. Piece is 61"x26"x88" and was made in 1981.
